Herding Agents to Thicken Oil Spills in Drift Ice for In Situ Burning: New Developments

, 2011
In situ burning is an oil spill response option particularly suited to remote ice-covered waters. The key to effective in situ burning is thick oil slicks.

Uncertainty of Arctic summer ice drift assessed by high-resolution SAR data

, 2015
Time-space varying uncertainty maps of monthly mean Arctic summer ice drift are presented. To assess the error statistics of two low-resolution Eulerian ice drift products, we use high-resolution Lagrangian ice motion derived from synthetic aperture ...

Ice drift and momentum exchange in winter Antarctic pack ice

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1990
This paper uses the Winter Weddell Sea Project 1986, winter Antarctic data set to (1) describe the nature of observed sea ice drift and momentum exchange and (2) determine relevant drag coefficients (linear and quadratic) and parameter values for three formulations of the momentum balance. The large‐scale mean divergence of the ice justifies, with some

On the propagation of discontinuities in a drifting ice cover

Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, 1992
Abstract A drifting ice cover on the surface of the sea is considered. The ice cover consists of ice floes having various sizes, shapes, and strength properties. For sufficiently rapid and small compressive-tensile loads, each ice floe behaves as an elastic body and its deformation can be described by the model of a linearly elastic Hooke body.

Ice-Floe Wave Drift Experiments

Offshore Technology Conference, 1986
ABSTRACT Systematic laboratory measurements were performed to determine the steady drift of isolated, tabular ice-floe models in regular waves. A relatively simple expression for the steady wave-induced drift of two-dimensional floes of uniform thickness and density in deep water was developed.

Use and need for knowledge on ice drift

2011
The ice drift problem contains interesting basic research questions. It is a two- dimensional problem in the branch of mechanics called geophysical fluid dynamics. The medium is a compressible fluid, whose dynamic characteristics are its largely variable strength (low to very high), low inertia, and the irreversibility of mechanical deformation ...

The East Antarctic sea ice zone: Ice characteristics and drift

GeoJournal, 1989
Results from studies of the surface energy balance and the ocean structure in the presence of fast ice near Mawson on the Antarctic coast are used to illustrate the important ways in which sea ice interacts with the ocean and atmosphere. Away from the coast, ship and drifting buoy observations are used to characterize the E Antarctic sea ice zone in a ...
