Validation of a drill string dynamical model and torsional stability

This paper proposes a lumped parameter model for the torsional vibration of a drill string, with a nonlinear friction torque representing the bit-rock interaction. This model is sufficient to analyze torsional instability (stick-slip oscillations).

Experimental Evaluations of Drill Bit and Drill String Dynamics

Abstract Laboratory and field experiments were performed to investigate the dynamics of the drill bit and drill string. Laboratory results for Anti-whirl and conventional polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bits showed that vibrations of the former were an order of magnitude less than those of the latter.

Bit-Bounce and Stick-Slip in Drill-String Dynamics

A recently proposed two degrees-of-freedom model for axial and torsional vibrations of drill string elsewhere is here revisited. The model involves state-dependent time delay, with discontinuous cutting and friction force nonlinearities. The original model is, here, enhanced by introducing axial and torsional damping, and axial stiffness.

In the drilling process for the exploration of oil and gas resources a variety of vibration phenomena occur. Here, just self-excited torsional vibrations and forced flexural vibrations of the drill-string are considered. An experimental setup which models a real drill-string was designed and constructed.
