Drilling String Corrosion - A Major Drilling Problem
Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology, 1967Abstract The sources of drilling string corrosion are discussed, together with an economic estimate of the magnitude of this problem in our drilling industry. Problems associated with measuring the corrosion rate in drilling fluids under field conditions are reviewed.

Drill String Management to Reduce Drilling Risks
IADC/SPE Drilling Conference, 1998Abstract Increases in recent and projected rig activity are putting tremendous strains on current inventories of drilling tools and on the industry supply chain attempting to bolster those inventories. Additionally, while much of the new activity is centered in established oil provinces and using established ...

Performance of Drill String Hardfacings
Journal of Energy Resources Technology, 1984Drill string hardfacings are composites of steel and tungsten carbide applied by welding techniques. This paper discusses the important variables involved and gives experimental results for casing wear and abrasive wear resistance.

Designing and Qualifying Drill Strings for Extended Reach Drilling
SPE Drilling & Completion, 1996Summary Extended reach (ER) drill string design involves selecting from a variety of available drill string components, those best suited to drill an ER well. In a typical ER well, torsion loads will be higher and tension loads will be lower than for a vertical well of the same measured depth.

Drill String Failures: Inevitable or Not?
IADC/SPE International Drilling Conference and ExhibitionAbstract The past few years have seen many experienced drilling operations personnel retire. Coincidently, the industry saw an increase in the number of drillstring failures, some of which could have potentially been avoided. These failures can result in non-productive time (NPT) like fishing trips, side tracking, or exorbitant repair ...

Longitudinal Vibrations of a Drill String
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1965When drilling an oil well with a rotary drill, the penetration rate often can be substantially increased by superimposing a vibratory motion on the rotating bit. In order to evaluate drilling methods that would include both rotary and vibratory action, a study has been made on the vibrational characteristics of long drill string. The resonant frequency

Data transmission in a drill string
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1984Data is transmitted through a drill string by means of acoustical energy by transmitting an acoustical signal for a first predetermined interval and ceasing transmission of the signal for a second predetermined interval to represent a first binary state; ceasing transmission of the signal for a third predetermined interval to represent a second binary ...

Mechanical Analysis of Drill Strings in Horizontal Directional Drilling
ICPTT 2011, 2011A large number of failure cases on horizontal directional drilling arise from complex forces, difficult mechanical analysis and lack of theoretical basis of construction parameters. So it's of great engineering value to make mechanical properties of horizontal directional drilling clear.

Fatigue of Drill String Connections
Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, 1995Abstract This paper reports full-scale tests on threaded connections used in drill strings. A concise background is given concerning the in-service environment and loading conditions on the connections. This details some of the reasons particular steels are used in preference to others. Crack growth data is given for ten full-scale axial

Experimental Evaluations of Drill Bit and Drill String Dynamics
SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 1994Abstract Laboratory and field experiments were performed to investigate the dynamics of the drill bit and drill string. Laboratory results for Anti-whirl and conventional polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bits showed that vibrations of the former were an order of magnitude less than those of the latter.
