Dynamics, Nonlinear Instabilities, and Control of Drill-strings

2020
Drill strings are flexible, slender structures, which are many kilometers long. They are used to transmit the rotary motion to the drill bit in the process of drilling a borehole. Due to the flexibility of the drill string and nonlinear interactions between the drill bit and rock, these systems often experience severe vibrations, and these vibrations ...

Identification While Drilling of Drill-String Dynamic Model for Diagnostics and Optimization

OTC Brasil, 2015
The main objective of this paper is to improve drilling performance by obtaining a representative dynamic model of a drilling system: top-drive, controls, drill-pipe and bottom hole assembly (BHA). High-fidelity simulations with a representative analytical model are a goal necessary to optimize controller-settings while or before ...

Dynamic Valuation Methodology for Fatigue Failure of Drill String

IADC/SPE Asia Pacific Drilling Technology Conference, 2016
Abstract Fatigue is one of the reasons for drill string failure. Based on the static stress characteristics, fatigue ratio was usually used to assess the risk of drill string fatigue failure, but it only takes the static stress into account.

Numerical Simulation of Drill-String Dynamics with an Initial Curvature

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2015
This work is devoted to modeling of nonlinear dynamics of the rotating drill-string taking into account initial curvature and finiteness of deformations. The drill-string is compressed by variable axial force. The case of flat bending of the drill-string with an initial curvature is studied, where drill-string considered as a one-dimensional rotating ...

Validation of a drill string dynamical model and torsional stability

Meccanica, 2017
This paper proposes a lumped parameter model for the torsional vibration of a drill string, with a nonlinear friction torque representing the bit-rock interaction. This model is sufficient to analyze torsional instability (stick-slip oscillations).

Observations on dynamic tensions of drill string during drilling operations of scientific drilling vessel Chikyu

OCEANS 2009, 2009
The scientific drilling vessel Chikyu began scientific drilling at the Nankai Trough in 2007 via a system integration drilling test off Shimokita. To attain success in deep drilling and coring, one of the important issues is to ensure the strength of the drill pipes.

Bit-Bounce and Stick-Slip in Drill-String Dynamics

2012
A recently proposed two degrees-of-freedom model for axial and torsional vibrations of drill string elsewhere is here revisited. The model involves state-dependent time delay, with discontinuous cutting and friction force nonlinearities. The original model is, here, enhanced by introducing axial and torsional damping, and axial stiffness.

EFFECT OF WEIGHTED DRILL PIPES ON THE DYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DRILL STRING IN THE ROTARY DRILLING METHOD

2017
Предложен порядок применения мер по предотвращению формирования волнообразного забоя буровой скважины. В основу рекомендации положены результаты исследования влияния характеристик утяжеленных бурильных труб на динамическое состояние бурильной ...
