The Drilling Fluid

1985
This section presents a limited description of drilling fluids. A complete discussion of drilling fluids (mud types, chemical treatments, solids control, water loss, and so on) is beyond the scope and intent of this manual. A more detailed discussion may be found in Section 4 of the Field Geologist’s Training Guide (MS-178).

Drilling Fluids for Wellbore Strengthening

Proceedings of IADC/SPE Drilling Conference, 2004
Abstract There is a clear advantage to drilling if we could strengthen the wellbore and drill at higher mud weights without losing fluid. A major prize is accessing difficult reserves in depleted reservoirs. Another application is in deep water drilling where the drilling window between pore pressure and fracture gradient is often narrow.

Drilling Fluid

2016
Lost circulation means loss of drilling fluid into the formation. In this chapter, the basic functions, properties, composition, and behavior of drilling fluids are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on those properties that play important roles in lost circulation, such as the density and rheological properties (yield stress, plastic viscosity, gel strength)

Drilling Fluid Chemistry

2018
By studying the composition and performance of drilling fluid and its control and adjustment, high quality, fast, safe, and economic drilling can be achieved. In this chapter, types, structures, function mechanisms, performances, and relevant control and adjustment methods of various drilling fluid treatment agents are introduced.

Rotary Steerable Drilling Fluid

SPE Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition, 2001
AbstractNew mud chemistry is shown to improve the efficiency of directional drilling with a rotary steerable drilling system. Full-scale (8½-in. bit) drilling results using a rotary steerable drilling system drilling to horizontal at an experimental test site and an application in the Huizhou 21-1 field, offshore Hong Kong in the South China Sea are ...

A modified Herschel–Bulkley model for rheological properties with temperature response characteristics of poly-sulfonated drilling fluid

Energy Sources, Part A: Recovery, Utilization, and Environmental Effects, 2020
In the deep oil and gas drilling operations, estimation and prediction of the rheological properties for a drilling fluid are of crucial importance for precisely hydraulic calculating, cuttings carrying and wellbore stability controlling.

A Multifunctional Drilling Fluid for Coalbed Methane Drilling

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
With extremely complicated geological conditions, there is abundant coalbed methane in the China's Ordos Basin Area. As a result of coexistence of different pressure systems in the same one naked well section, there are so many problems taking place occasionally during the drilling process, such as the formation lost circulation and collapse, which ...
