Integrating ecological feedbacks across scales and levels of organization

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 5, May 2026.
In ecosystems, species interact in various ways with other species, and with their local environment. In addition, ecosystems are coupled in space by diverse types of flows. From these links connecting different ecological entities can emerge circular pathways of indirect effects: feedback loops.

An atlas of plant selenium metabolism

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 4, Page 2041-2060, May 2026.
Summary Selenium (Se) is not only a rare and toxic element but also an essential micronutrient for humans and animals that is often in short supply. Terrestrial plants do not require Se, but it can have growth‐promoting or negative effects, depending on the exposure level.

THE TRAFFIC IN REPAIRMEN AND A CASE OF GENDER IMPROPRIETY IN POST‐WAR SARAJEVO

open access: yesCultural Anthropology, Volume 41, Issue 2, Page 275-296, May 2026.
ABSTRACT In postwar Sarajevo, repair is mainly a masculine activity, and people lean on communal networks to get things fixed under dire economic circumstances. Yet increased numbers of women without men in their households as an effect of the war necessitate the mediation of other women in facilitating access to men's labor.

MAGTWIST: A Magnetically‐Driven Rotary Actuator Using a Traveling‐Wave With Integrated Stiffness Tunability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 31, 16 April 2026.
MAGTWIST: A compact magnetic rotary actuator, enabling smooth, stepless rotation, and on‐demand locking. Inspired by peristalsis, a soft polymer belt generates a traveling‐wave, enabling 270° rotation when heated. Cooling stiffens the belt, locking it in position and enabling it to withstand high loads.
