Contact Dynamics of a Rotary Drillstring System in Elliptical Wellbores
As drilling depths continue to increase in oil and gas operations, the associated downhole environment has grown more complex. Data from recent field measurements reveals significant differences between the major and minor axes of the wellbore cross ...

Avoiding harmful oscillations in a drillstring through dynamical analysis [PDF]
Complexity of oilwell drillstrings makes unfeasible the direct application of control methodologies to suppress non-desired oscillations existing in these systems.

Flow Field and Pressure Loss Characteristics at Rotary Drillstring Joints
A thorough understanding and accurate calculation of the annulus pressure losses are paramount to drilling design and construction. However, due to the influence of the drillstring rotation and the abrupt dimensional variation at the joint, it is difficult to calculate the pressure loss by theoretical analysis in the annulus at the drillstring joints ...

Analysis of the Effect of Whirl on Drillstring Fatigue
There are many kinds of vibration forms of drillstring in petroleum drilling. Whirl is one of the main vibration modes when drilling tools are drilling, and it is also the main reason of fatigue failure of the drillstring. In this paper, the causes of drillstring whirl are analyzed.

Drillstring Oscillations: The Influence of Fluid Loading and Stabilizer Effects
Drillstring vibrations can be undesirable for drilling operations. Here, attention is focused on vibrations of the upper portion of a drillstring as these vibrations can cause drillpipe wear and casing wear. A reduced‐order model is developed to study the motions of a drillstring by taking fluid loading and stabilizer effects into account.

Experimental Study on Axial Impact Mitigating Stick‐Slip Vibration with a PDC Bit
Stick‐slip vibration reduces the drilling rate of penetration, causes early wear of bits, and threatens the safety of downhole tools. Therefore, it is necessary to study suppression methods of stick‐slip vibration to achieve efficient and safe drilling.

Reduced basis method for managed pressure drilling based on a model with local nonlinearities
Abstract To circumvent restrictions of conventional drilling methods, such as slow control actions and inability to drill depleted reservoirs, a drilling method called managed pressure drilling (MPD) has been developed. In MPD, single‐phase flow processes can be modeled as a feedback interconnection of a high‐order linear system and a low‐order ...

Dynamic Model and Quantitative Analysis of Stick‐Slip Vibration in Horizontal Well
Stick‐slip is very harmful to the service life of drillstring. The extended Hamilton principle is applied in the paper. Then, finite element method (FEM) is employed to describe the model. The drillstring‐borehole impact and friction, fluid‐structure interaction, bit‐rock interaction, and gravity are considered in this model. The influence of axial and
