Vibration analysis of drillstrings with string—borehole interaction

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2008
Drillstring vibration is one of the major causes for a deteriorated drilling performance, and if left untreated may result in a complete failure of the drilling process. Although the variations in the drilling load, stick-slip, and whirling are known to be the primary causes of severe vibrations, they often give rise to excessive flexural deformations

Performance Drilling: A Practical Solution to Drillstring Vibration

IADC/SPE Drilling Conference, 1994
ABSTRACT Recent research has greatly enhanced the industry's appreciation of drillstring dynamic behaviour but, as is often the case, this work has raised more questions than it has answered. Now that the inherent limitations of rotary drilling are better understood, the search is on for a means of closing the ‘efficiency gap’, ie, the ...

Fully coupled vibrations of actively controlled drillstrings

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2003
Abstract A fully coupled model for axial, lateral, and torsional vibrations of actively controlled drillstrings is presented. The proposed model includes the mutual dependence of these vibrations, which arises due to bit/formation and drillstring/borehole wall interactions as well as other geometric and dynamic non-linearities.

Modeling and Analysis of Drillstring Vibration in Riserless Environment

Journal of Energy Resources Technology, 2012
Riserless drilling poses numerous operational challenges that adversely affect the efficiency of the drilling process. These challenges include increased torque and drag, buckling, increased vibration, poor hole cleaning, tubular failures, poor cement jobs, and associated problems during tripping operations. These challenges are closely associated with

Lateral Vibrations of the Lower Part of a Drillstring

2000
A drillstring for drilling oil or gas wells is one of the most slender structures known, and hence is liable to experience vibration and stability problems. The larger upper part is held in tension, so one may genuinely refer to the structure as a string rather than as a beam, but the lower part is usually kept in compression in order to enhance the ...

Modeling of Rotary Drillstring Vibrations: An Overview

International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics
This paper presents a review of the current status of research pertinent to the problem of modeling vibrations in rotary drillstring systems. Dynamic modeling of drillstrings is a challenging multidisciplinary problem due to the special structural features of the drillstring, as well as the intrinsic vibration excitations and interaction mechanisms ...

Improvements in the Root Cause Analysis of Drillstring Vibration

IADC/SPE Drilling Conference and Exhibition, 2016
Abstract Drillstring vibration is a leading cause of downhole tool failure and premature wear of downhole equipment. The main challenges faced during drilling include performing rapid analyses to determine the root cause of the vibration, clear identification of the active mechanism, and implementation of the appropriate corrective ...

Vibration of Periodic Drillstrings with Local Sources of Resonance

2016
The vibration of drillstrings is, in general, detrimental to the drilling process and may induce premature wear and damage of the drilling equipment which eventually results in fatigue failures. In this proposal, a new design of drillstrings is proposed for mitigating such undesirable vibrations in an attempt to avoid wear and premature failures.
