Analysis of the Effect of Whirl on Drillstring Fatigue

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2021
There are many kinds of vibration forms of drillstring in petroleum drilling. Whirl is one of the main vibration modes when drilling tools are drilling, and it is also the main reason of fatigue failure of the drillstring.

Dynamic Model and Quantitative Analysis of Stick-Slip Vibration in Horizontal Well

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2020
Stick-slip is very harmful to the service life of drillstring. The extended Hamilton principle is applied in the paper. Then, finite element method (FEM) is employed to describe the model.

Multiple-Echo Suppression Modeling and Experimental Verification for Acoustic Transmission along Periodic Drillstring Using Dual Receivers

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2014
In the oil industry, the accompanied reverberation is a major constraint in the transmission rate and distance because the drillstring is a heterogeneous assembly.

A Novel Artificial Neural Network‐Based Correlation for Evaluating the Rate of Penetration in a Natural Gas Bearing Sandstone Formation: A Case Study in a Middle East Oil Field

open access: yesJournal of Sensors, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
This study presented an empirical correlation to estimate the drilling rate of penetration (ROP) while drilling into a sandstone formation. The equation developed in this study was based on the artificial neural networks (ANN) which was learned to assess the ROP from the drilling mechanical parameters.

A Review of the Research and Development of High‐Frequency Measurement Technologies Used for Nonlinear Dynamics of Drillstring

open access: yesShock and Vibration, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
High‐frequency measurements can provide much more new insights for drillstring dynamics compared to traditional instruments, leading to a new realm of understanding of drillstring behaviors in great detail than before. In this paper, data acquisition tools with high‐frequency sample rates and the data processing are introduced.

Drillstring Oscillations: The Influence of Fluid Loading and Stabilizer Effects

open access: yesShock and Vibration, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Drillstring vibrations can be undesirable for drilling operations. Here, attention is focused on vibrations of the upper portion of a drillstring as these vibrations can cause drillpipe wear and casing wear. A reduced‐order model is developed to study the motions of a drillstring by taking fluid loading and stabilizer effects into account.

Experimental Study on Axial Impact Mitigating Stick‐Slip Vibration with a PDC Bit

open access: yesShock and Vibration, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Stick‐slip vibration reduces the drilling rate of penetration, causes early wear of bits, and threatens the safety of downhole tools. Therefore, it is necessary to study suppression methods of stick‐slip vibration to achieve efficient and safe drilling.

Fractional-order controllers for stick-slip vibration mitigation in oil well drill-strings

open access: yesJournal of Low Frequency Noise, Vibration and Active Control, 2021
Drillstring–borehole interaction can produce severely damaging vibrations. An example is stick–slip vibration, which negatively affects drilling performance, tool integrity and completion time, and costs.
