Laboratory investigation of drillstring vibrations
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2009Experimental investigations of drillstring dynamics are essential to complement the theoretical studies and to alleviate the complexity of such dynamic models. This article presents an experimental investigation using a specially designed drilling test rig.

Self-excited vibrations of a drillstring bit
International Applied Mechanics, 2013The whirling vibrations of a rotating drillstring bottom-hole assembly subject to the moment of friction are analyzed qualitatively. A problem statement and solution are given. The self-excitation of vibrations is simulated. It is established that during the self-excitation of whirling vibrations, the axial line of the drill bit can slowly and rapidly ...

Wirl vibrations of the drillstring bottom hole assembly
Strength of Materials, 2010The paper is focused on a problem of flexural vibrations of a rotating drillstring bottom hole assembly under the action of the friction (cutting) moment. The mechanism of self-excitation of the vibrations has been analyzed. The induced moment is shown to be nonconservative and represents the main source of dynamic instability of the system.

The Genesis of Torsional Drillstring Vibrations
SPE Drilling Engineering, 1992Summary Inherent drilling characteristics of polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bits alone can be sufficient to excite severe torsional drillstring vibrations. The work presented here augments previous findings that torsional vibrations can result from the drilling characteristics of the bit itself.

Modeling of Rotary Drillstring Vibrations: An Overview
International Journal of Structural Stability and DynamicsThis paper presents a review of the current status of research pertinent to the problem of modeling vibrations in rotary drillstring systems. Dynamic modeling of drillstrings is a challenging multidisciplinary problem due to the special structural features of the drillstring, as well as the intrinsic vibration excitations and interaction mechanisms ...

Active control of drillstring vibrations by mode localization
Structural Control and Health Monitoring, 1997AbstractA method of controlling vibrations in a drillstring is proposed. The method is based on altering the system eigenstructure by feedback such that the closed loop system mode shapes are spatially confined to small geometric regions. Both active and passive means can be used to realize the resulting designs. Simulations are used to show the effect

Drillstring Imaging—An Interpretation of Surface Drilling Vibrations
SPE Drilling and Completion, 1993Summary A brief review of drillstring vibration literature is followed by the development of a model-based approach to analyze drillstring vibrations. The resulting image calculated from vibration data allows identification of interaction points between the wellbore and the drillstring. Field data examples are given.

Drillstring Vibration and Wellbore Instability
Journal of Energy Resources Technology, 2002Wellbore instability can be attributed to several causes. The ones thought to be most important include: chemical interaction with the drilling fluid, high tectonic stresses, and insufficient mud weight. Drillstring vibration, although not traditionally addressed as a potential cause, might influence the stability of wellbores drilled in specific ...
