UV-activated permanganate process for micro-organic pollutant degradation: efficiency, mechanism and influencing factors

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2021
Ultraviolet-activated permanganate (UV/PM) process is a novel advanced oxidation process (AOP), but its application potential remains to be evaluated. This work investigates the degradation of refractory organic pollutant by UV/PM in terms of efficiency,

To Drink or Not to Drink? That Is the Question [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation, 2007
Numerous studies have used a J-shaped or U-shaped curve to describe the relationship between alcohol use and total mortality. The nadir of the curves based on recent meta-analysis suggested optimal benefit at approximately half a drink per day. Fewer than 4 drinks per day in men and fewer than 2 per day in women appeared to confer benefit.

Noble gases in aquitard provide insight into underlying subsurface stratigraphy and free gas formation

open access: yesVadose Zone Journal, 2023
Biogeochemical gas production resulting in free gas phase formation can severely affect groundwater and solute transport in aquifers. Such gas–water interactions are important in aquifers affected by geogenic As, which are commonly associated with ...

Light-dominated selection shaping filamentous cyanobacterial assemblages drives odor problem in a drinking water reservoir

open access: yesnpj Clean Water, 2022
Filamentous cyanobacteria have substantial niche overlap, and the causal mechanism behind their succession remains unclear. This has practical significance since several filamentous genera are the main producers of the musty odorant 2-methylisoborneol ...

Drink! Drink! Drink! [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ, 2006
In Ireland we love our funerals. George Best's could not live up to the media hype, but it was still pretty big, the biggest since that of the hunger striker and MP Bobby Sands. Both were wasted, self destructive lives; one drank himself to death, the other starved himself to death, though I don't think either man would enjoy the comparison.
