Implantable Light‐Powered Human Designer Cells for Electrical Energy Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by the eel's electric organ, a miniature implantable biohybrid device is developed to generate electricity under light activation. The device utilizes a light‐dependent ion gradient formation that induced by genetically engineered human designer cells that express light‐sensitive membrane ion channels and proton pumps, working in synergy with ...

Modelling alcohol consumption during adolescence using zero inflated negative binomial and decision trees

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Psychology Applied to Legal Context, 2010
Alcohol is currently the most consumed substance among the Spanish adolescent population. Some of the variables that bear an influence on this consumption include ease of access, use of alcohol by friends and some personality factors.

Decoupling Transport of Salt Ions and Water in Hierarchically Structured Hydrogel for High Salinity Desalination

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchically structured hydrogel evaporator enables controlled decoupling of salt‐ion and water transport pathways for efficient solar desalination in hypersaline environments. Engineered radial and vertical channels direct salt away from the evaporative interface, enhancing water evaporation and ambient energy harvesting via a cold‐surface effect.

Drinking-Driving and Other Risk Behaviors Among Missouri High School Students, 1997-2005. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Underage drinking remains a critical public health issue nationwide; it also brings about tremendous burden on the Missouri taxpayers. Survey data from the Missouri Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) from 1997 to 2005 revealed that despite ...

The Mechanisms of Alcohol Control [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A substantial economics literature documents that tighter alcohol controls reduce alcohol related harms, but far less is known about mechanisms. We use the universe of Canadian mortality records to document that Canada's Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA)

Tuning Active Hydrogen on Reconstructed RuO2/Co(OH)2 Catalysts for Selective Ammonia Synthesis

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A combined approach of precatalyst design and electrolyte engineering is employed to develop highly active, selective, and stable catalysts for electrochemical nitrate reduction. In alkaline media, the reconstructed RuO2/Co(OH)2 catalyst demonstrates impressive performance in ammonia synthesis, rechargeable Zn‐NO3− battery, and the remediation of ...

Resistance of Oil‐Infused PDMS with Different Macroporosities Against Bacterial Attachment

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
In this study, a series of environmentally benign, nonfluorinated liquid paraffin‐infused porous PDMS networks with varying porosities is created. By introducing different homogenous and heterogenous bulk structures and varying interfacial roughness by sugar and salt templating, the role of porosity and oil availability on the resistance against ...
