Abstract The major marine nitrogen‐fixing cyanobacterium, Crocosphaera watsonii, is restricted to warm tropical and subtropical oceans, while the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. C. watsonii fixes nitrogen (oxygen‐sensitive) and carbon (oxygen‐evolving) during night and day, respectively.
