Estimating red deer Cervus elaphus population density using drones in a steep and rugged terrain

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Precise and accurate information about population density, crucial for wildlife management, is difficult to obtain for elusive species living in dense forests or steep and inaccessible terrain. Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), we developed a method for obtaining absolute population estimates of ungulates living in steep, rugged, and partly ...

Advances in Aircraft Skin Defect Detection Using Computer Vision: A Survey and Comparison of YOLOv9 and RT-DETR Performance

open access: yesAerospace
Aircraft skin surface defect detection is critical for aviation safety but is currently mostly reliant on manual or visual inspections. Recent advancements in computer vision offer opportunities for automation.

Experimental assessment of large mammal population estimates from airborne thermal videography

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Wildlife resource management requires reliable, fast, and affordable methods of surveying wildlife populations to develop and adaptively adjust policies. Thermal video from drones can yield high rates of detection over large areas with relative speed and safety.

Light tuned to the avian eye elicits early detection and escape from an approaching aircraft

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science
Collisions between birds and aircraft are a global problem. We identified different behavioural parameters affecting the probability of escape from a potential collision with an approaching aircraft, which is a function of the probability that the animal

Drone‐based radiotelemetry and imagery systems provide an advantage over traditional techniques for estimating survival of dependent juveniles

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
We used drone‐based radiotelemetry and multispectral imagery to estimate detection and survival probabilities of blue‐winged teal broods in Saskatchewan, Canada. Weekly brood survival probabilities, estimated via Cormack‐Jolly‐Seber models, increased with age and were comparable between drone methods.

Time to Breakdown for Type I Motor Winding Insulation Under High‐Frequency High‐Slew‐Rate Square Wave Voltages

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The emergence of (ultra)wide bandgap ((U)WBG)‐based devices has significantly enhanced performance in high‐frequency switching applications, enabling breakthroughs in electric transportation, aerospace, and renewable energy systems. However, it also presents considerable challenges to insulation systems, such as electric motor winding ...

Drone impact assessment on aircraft structure: flat plate testing and analysis

open access: yes, 2020
Over the last decade, aerial drones have been increasingly used by both professional and inexperienced users resulting in few impact incidents throughout the world. Transport Canada (TC) has already implemented regulations dealing with the operation of drones, especially in sensitive areas such as airports where a safe distance must be observed ...

Scaling from microsite to landscape to resolve litter decomposition dynamics in globally extensive drylands

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Decomposition is the transformation of dead organic matter into its inorganic constituents. In most biomes, decomposition rates can be accurately predicted with simple mathematical models, but these models have long under‐predicted decomposition in globally extensive ...

Facilitating macrosystem biology with organismal‐scale airborne remote sensing: Challenges and opportunities

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Emergent ecosystem properties, such as population and trait distributions, biodiversity and energy and water fluxes, occur because of the dynamic interactions of individuals in their environment.
