Bioinspired programmable wettability arrays for droplets manipulation [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2020
Significance Droplet manipulation has received great attention and research for its potential applications in various fields. Wettability surfaces, especially tunable wettability surfaces, are efficient way to manipulate the pinning and sliding of droplets. However, these surfaces only demonstrate uniform wettability control behavior and thus

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Manipulation of single sub-femtolitre droplets via partial coalescence in a direct-current electric field

open access: yesFlow, 2021
It is demonstrated how aqueous droplets with volumes down to the sub-femtolitre range can be manipulated, including the withdrawal of minute samples from the droplets.

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Bioinspired superwetting materials for water manipulation

open access: yesDroplet, 2022
Water manipulation is crucial for a wide range of engineering applications, such as microfluidics, heat transfer, desalination, and water harvesting. Despite scientific achievements in the past few decades, it remains challenging to achieve efficient and

Asymmetric Jetting during the Impact of Liquid Drops on Superhydrophobic Concave Surfaces

open access: yesMicromachines, 2022
The impact of liquid drops on superhydrophobic solid surfaces is ubiquitous and of practical importance in many industrial processes. Here, we study the impingement of droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces with a macroscopic dimple structure, during ...

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Rapid Customization and Manipulation Mechanism of Micro-Droplet Chip for 3D Cell Culture

open access: yesMicromachines, 2022
A full PDMS micro-droplet chip for 3D cell culture was prepared by using SLA light-curing 3D printing technology. This technology can quickly customize various chips required for experiments, saving time and capital costs for experiments.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Interaction of HS1BP3 with cortactin modulates TKS5 localisation, cell secretion and cancer malignancy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Here, we demonstrate that HS1BP3 interacts with Cortactin through a proline‐rich region (PRR3.1) and show that this interaction, and HS1BP3 itself, promote cancer cell proliferation and invasion. Inhibition of this interaction leads to build‐up of TKS5 in multivesicular endosomes and altered secretion of CD63 and CD9, providing an explanation for the ...
