Resilience through diversity: The potential of modelling species and variety interactions to enhance resilience of production systems

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Agricultural production systems in the global North combine monocultures of specialised varieties and breeds with external interventions and inputs. Increasing the diversity of varieties, breeds and species may increase the system's resilience to external pressures through beneficial interactions.

Plasticity in plant hydraulic traits: An evaluation of a common‐taxa experiment across a climatic gradient in the Western U.S.

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Due to climate change, plants are experiencing both prolonged drought events and increasingly variable water availability, prompting the need for better understanding of potential impacts on plant performance, as well as the identification of low‐water‐use plants.

Drought Tolerance of Geophytes

open access: yesDrought Tolerance of Geophytes
Drought tolerance was determined in 45 species/cultivars of 29 genera of seven families of geophytes. Salt water irrigation at concentrations of 0, 500, 1000, 5,000 mgl^ was used. Fourteen species/cultivars with no salt treatment (control) either did not flower or flowered at very low rates. This was probably because no fiowers were initiated or flower

The Cinderella tree, Quillaja saponaria – A soap story

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Our current understanding of plants has been shaped by the entwining of different cultures. The Chilean soapbark tree, traditionally valued as a source of natural soap, was shown by serendipitous research in France in the 1900s to produce compounds that can boost the immune response to vaccines.
