The dictionary definition of drug is ‘A medical substance used alone or as an ingredient’. Although in common usage ‘drug’ tends to be associated with illegal stimulants, I will use it here to mean any substance administered with a view to producing physiological change (excluding the basic metabolic requirements of food, water and oxygen).
