Developing methods for solving drug dosage calculations

British Journal of Nursing, 2009
This second part of a three-part series of articles examining drug calculation skills, focuses on the different methods that can be used to solve drug calculations. It builds on Part 1 (Supporting the development of calculating skills in nurses, 18(7): 399–402), and provides examples of different methods that can be used to plan and solve a range of ...

SIMPLIFICATION OF DRUG DOSAGE CALCULATION BY APPLICATION OF THE SURFACE AREA PRINCIPLE

Pediatrics, 1950
Observations on the relationship of administered dosage per unit of body surface area and blood concentration achieved when different amounts of sulfadiazine and acetylsalicylic acid were given patients varying widely in size indicate that a direct proportionality exists for these two drugs regardless of patient size.

Simplified Procedures for Calculating Drug Dosage from Body Weight in Infancy and Childhood

Pediatrics, 1961
The primary purpose of this communication is to describe some rather simple procedures for calculating pediatric doses when they are proportional to a fixed power of body weight. How to calculate drug dosage accurately: advice for nurses.

Professional nurse (London, England), 2002
Nowhere is basic maths more important for nurses than when calculating drug doses. Simply having a GCSE in the subject does not seem to be good enough for the kind of mathematical calculations nurses need to be able to perform. However, following a few golden rules can simplify what at first appears to be a very complicated process.
