From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Neutrophilic granule protein promotes lipopolysaccharide-induced iNOS/NO expression via JAK2/STAT1 signaling pathway and augments bacteria clearance of macrophages

open access: yesCellular and Molecular Life Sciences
Neutrophilic granule protein (NGP) was identified as a granular protein in neutrophils, but its function in macrophages has not been fully understood. In our prior investigation, NGP was observed to be significantly upregulated in macrophages following ...

All-cause mortality after non-fatal self-poisoning : a cohort study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: Suicide has been repeatedly shown to have greatly increased incidence after non-fatal self-harm but far less is known about early death from other causes.

Castration‐resistant prostate cancer cells are addicted to the high activity of cyclin‐dependent kinase 2

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We show that emergence of castration‐resistant prostate (CRPC) is associated with significant upregulation of cyclins that positively regulate cyclin‐dependent kinase 2 (CDK2) and concomitant downregulation of CDK4 cyclins. This renders CRPC cells dependent on the high activity of CDK2, and CDK2 inhibitors synergistically sensitize CRPC cells to both ...

A case of accidental Ricin poisoning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A case report of accidental, mild ricin poisoning by ingestion of ten Castor beans by a 70 year old man. The clinical presentation is followed by a discussion about the toxicity of ricin, its use and misuse and the contrast between the toxicity of pure ...

Paclitaxel induces NM2‐dependent cellular contraction through GEF‐H1 dissociation from microtubules and RhoA/ROCK activation in cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Taxanes are widely used chemotherapeutics whose effects on cellular mechanics remain poorly understood. We show that paclitaxel induces rapid cellular contraction by promoting GEF‐H1 dissociation from microtubules and non‐muscle myosin II activation through RhoA/ROCK.

The processes of reform in Victoria’s alcohol and other drug sector, 2011-2014 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper explores issues and concerns related to the 2014 alcohol and other drug sector recommissioning process in Victoria. Overview In mid-2014, the Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association approached the Drug Policy Modelling Program, at the ...

Salmonella enterica serovar typhi limits the potency of typhoid toxin and ADP‐ribosylating toxin AB to establish a persistent infection

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The two catalytic subunits of typhoid toxin dissociate from the holotoxin in the ER of an intoxicated cell, but only CdtB exits the ER to generate immunosuppressive effects. PltA is retained in the ER and sequestered from its cytosolic target, thus allowing the anti‐inflammatory effects of CdtB to promote intestinal colonization.

Rhabdomyolysis in Patients with Drug or Chemical Poisoning: Clinical Investigation and Implications [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Medical Sciences
Background: Given that poisoning patterns vary by region and no comprehensive data exist on chemical/drug-induced rhabdomyolysis in Yazd province (Iran), this investigation was conducted to assess rhabdomyolysis incidence among patients with drug or ...
