Survey of Ophthalmology, 2001
Homeostasis of the tear film involves delicate hormonal and neuronal regulatory mechanisms. The eye appears to be a target organ for sex hormones, particularly the androgens, as they modulate the immune system and trophic functions of the lacrimal glands and the functioning of the meibomian glands.

EPIDEMIOLOGY OF DRY EYE SYNDROME.
Cornea, 2000Dry eye syndrome (DES) represents a heterogeneous group of conditions that share inadequate lubrication of the ocular surface as their common denominator. DES is characterized by symptoms of ocular dryness and discomfort due to insufficient tear quantity or quality caused by low tear production and/or excessive tear evaporation.

Dry eye in the elderly population is a condition with a multitude of contributing factors and a wide spectrum of severity. The complex tear film is made up of layers of oil, aqueous and mucin, produced by the meibomian glands, main and accessory lacrimal glands, and by the goblet cells, respectively.

Tactile sensations may derive from non-specific stimuli and lead to erroneous diagnosis and treatment. A perception of dryness may be caused by non-dry conditions of which four are presented here: (1) lid margin touch, (2) conjunctival laxity, (3) cilia touch, and (4) fibrin accumulation in conjunctival inflammation.
