Contrasting bee pollination in two co-occurring distylic species of Cordia (Cordiaceae, Boraginales) in the Brazilian semi-arid Caatinga: generalist in C. globosa vs. specialist in C. leucocephala

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2010
In this study we compare the reproductive biology of Cordia globosa and C. leucocephala (Cordiaceae, Boraginales; formerly referred to Boraginaceae) to understand the functioning of the floral morphs and the relations with their effective pollinators ...

Restoring Hawaii's Dry Forests [PDF]

open access: yesBioScience, 2000
Abstract A half-dozen black feral goats looked up Robert Cabin emerged from the stand of trees. Wild and wary, they had been scrounging for food in thr rough lava field on the Kona slope of the island of Hawaii.

On the occurrence of bryophytes and macrolichens in different lowland rain forest types at Mabura Hill, Guyana [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
A floristic and ecological study of bryophytes and macrolichens in different lowland rain forest types around Mabura Hill, Guyana, South America, yielded 170 species: 52 mosses, 82 liverworts and 36 macrolichens. Lejeuneaceae account for about 30% of the

Assessing forest availability for wood supply in Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The quantification of forests available for wood supply (FAWS) is essential for decision-making with regard to the maintenance and enhancement of forest resources and their contribution to the global carbon cycle.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Morphological variation in fruits and seeds of Ceiba aesculifolia and its relationship with germination and seedlings biomass

open access: yesBotan‪ical Sciences, 2017
Background Morphologic variation in fruits and seeds affects the performance and adaptation of plants. Only a few studies have integrally analyzed these variables and their effects in plant germination and early growth in tropical dry forest (TDF ...

Seed, seedling, tirodendro morphology and germination of Anadenanthera macrocarpa (Benth.) Brenan (Fabaceae, Mimosoideae)

open access: yesHoehnea, 2020
The specie Anadenanthera macrocarpa (Benth.) Brenan, angico-vermelho, is little studied regarding the morphological characters of its seeds, seedlings and tirodendo. Therefore, the aims of this study were to describe and illustrate the morphology of seed

The Use of Camera Traps and Auxiliary Satellite Telemetry to Estimate Jaguar Population Density in Northwestern Costa Rica

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
Regular evaluation of jaguar (Panthera onca) population status is an important part of conservation decision-making. Currently, camera trapping has become the standard method used to estimate jaguar abundance and demographic parameters, though evidence ...

Phylogenetic relationships in two African Cedreloideae genera (Meliaceae) reveal multiple rain/dry forest transitions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Establishing phylogenetic relationships allows investigating how species diversity has evolved in various ecosystems. The genera Entandrophragma and Khaya contain tree species distributed in different African biomes (lowland rain forest, lowland dry ...

Biomass partitioning and growth efficiency in four naturally regenerated forest tree species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Current forest growth models and yield tables are almost exclusively based on data from mature trees, reducing their applicability to young and developing stands.
