Ecological Machining: Near-dry Machining

2008
This chapter points out major ways to reduce the ecological and health impacts of metal working fluids (MWFs). In the continuous quest for dry machining, only one process can offer a near-term solution for practical applications. This process uses a minimum quantity of lubrication and is referred to as “near-dry”.

Piston for dry crankcase machines

Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, 1990
There are several problems when such machines are operated in an inert gas medium. The major problem is at the joint between the pin and the bearing. The pin surface gets damaged because of the small rocking angle (less than the angle between adjacent needles), high .contact pressures (above 104 MPa), and comparatively large rocking frequency ...

Dry Machinability of Aluminum Alloys

World Tribology Congress III, Volume 1, 2005
Adverse effects of the use of cutting fluids and environmental concerns with regard to cutting fluid disposability is compelling industry to adopt Dry or near Dry Machining, with the aim of eliminating or significantly reducing the use of metal working fluids.

Dry Machining Using CrAlYN Coated Carbides

Plasma Processes and Polymers, 2007
The current study discusses the influence of yttrium content of magnetron sputtered chromium-based coatings on the wear behavior in dry machining of steel and aluminum alloy. Both tribological tests and practical wear experiments in dry turning and drilling were performed.

Dry and Near-Dry Machining Techniques for Green Manufacturing

2018
Dry and near-dry techniques have been developed for sustainability interventions in machining. These techniques not only take care of sustainability and make the machining green, but also improve productivity and surface quality. This chapter comprehensively discusses various important aspects of these green manufacturing techniques.
