Evolution of mechanical behaviours of an expansive soil during drying-wetting, freeze–thaw, and drying-wetting-freeze–thaw cycles

Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment, 2021
This paper investigates the volumetric, microstructural, and shear behaviours of an expansive soil during multiple drying-wetting (DW), freeze–thaw (FT), and drying-wetting-freeze–thaw (DWFT) cycles. Specimens compacted at natural moisture content and dry density were subjected to 1, 4, 6, and 10 DW, FT, or DWFT cycles. Volumetric changes were recorded

Dry/wet cycling reduces spore germination and viability in six peatland bryophytes

Plant Biology, 2023
Abstract Dry/wet cycling driven by water level fluctuation in wetlands may strongly influence the destiny of seeds. However, how dry/wet cycling affects spore survival and germinability in peatland bryophytes is poorly understood. Six peatland bryophytes, three hummock‐ and three hollow‐dwelling Sphagnum species, were chosen as study species.

Temperature-Induced Deterioration Mechanisms in Mudstone during Dry–Wet Cycles

Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, 2017
Although temperature is a main external effect on rock decay, the relationship between a rock’s decay rate and temperature still remains unclear and there is limited information about the rate of rock decay under varied temperatures during dry–wet cycle conditions in southwest China.

Shrinkage and Interior Humidity of Concrete under Dry–Wet Cycles

Drying Technology, 2012
The dry–wet cycle is one of the aggressive environmental conditions suffered by concrete. This article focuses on the experimental study and theoretical simulation of shrinkage of concrete during dry–wet cycles. The experimental results show that the interior relative humidity of concrete is periodically changed during dry–wet cycles.

Chloride transport in cracked RC beams under dry–wet cycles

Magazine of Concrete Research, 2017
The coupled effect of transverse cracking and cyclic drying–wetting conditions on chloride penetration in concrete is explored in this paper. The transport mechanisms of chloride in cracked concrete subjected to drying–wetting cycles are described and simplified.

Shear creep experiments and modeling of granite under dry-wet cycling

Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment, 2021
Repeated dry-wet cycling can substantially alter rock mechanical properties, which poses a serious risk to the safety and stability of geotechnical engineering projects. Shear creep tests were performed on granite samples subjected to dry-wet cycling to determine the performance deterioration and variation of creep properties under hydraulic weathering

Shear Strength of Unsaturated Soils under Multiple Drying-Wetting Cycles

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2014
AbstractUnder the same stress state, a soil behaves differently when it follows drying and wetting processes because of hysteresis. The purpose of this study was to understand the shear strength characteristics of unsaturated soil under multiple cycles of drying and wetting.

Model of chloride penetration into cracked concrete subject to drying–wetting cycles

Construction and Building Materials, 2012
Abstract Drying and wetting cycles condition is always identified as the most unfavorable environment condition for reinforce concrete structure subjected to chloride-induced deterioration processes. When a crack occurs, it accelerates the ingress of chloride ions and affects durability.

Chloride diffusion behavior of engineered cementitious composite under dry-wet cycles

Construction and Building Materials, 2020
Abstract This study investigated the chloride diffusion behavior and mechanism of engineered cementitious composite (ECC) under dry-wet cycles and NaCl immersion. A standard chloride diffusion test was conducted to evaluate the effects of water-to-binder ratio (w/b), NaCl solution concentration and exposure time on the chloride diffusion depth ...
