Estimation of the Memory Parameter of the Infinite Source Poisson Process

open access: yes, 2007
Long-range dependence induced by heavy tails is a widely reported feature of internet traffic. Long-range dependence can be defined as the regular variation of the variance of the integrated process, and half the index of regular variation is then ...

Sigma, tau and Abelian functions of algebraic curves

open access: yes, 2010
We compare and contrast three different methods for the construction of the differential relations satisfied by the fundamental Abelian functions associated with an algebraic curve.

Soliton Fay identities. I. Dark soliton case

open access: yes, 2014
We derive a set of bilinear identities for the determinants of the matrices that have been used to construct the dark soliton solutions for various models.

Giving land back or righting wrongs? Comparative issues in the study of land restitution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Land is a significant and controversial topic in South Africa. Addressing the land claims of those dispossessed in the past has proved to be a demanding, multidimensional process. In many respects the land restitution program that was launched as part of

Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in Uranium Compounds

open access: yes, 2011
Recent advances on ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe and UCoGe are presented. The superconductivity (SC) peacefully coexists with the ferromagnetism (FM), forming the spin-triplet state of Cooper pairs.

Tails of random sums of a heavy-tailed number of light-tailed terms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The tail of the distribution of a sum of a random number of independent and identically distributed nonnegative random variables depends on the tails of the number of terms and of the terms themselves. This situation is of interest in the collective risk

High Charge Carrier Mobility in Non‐Conjugated 3D Covalent Organic Frameworks

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A non‐conjugated 3D COF constructed via boronate ester linkages from tetraphenylene and pyrene‐based monomers is reported, which exhibits a high charge carrier mobility of 14 ± 1 cm2 V−1 s−1. ABSTRACT π‐Conjugation, π–π stacking, and long‐range order play a central role in determining charge transport efficiency in organic materials.

Livestock Tango: U.S. and Latin America Dance Together, but Who Will Lead?

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study examines the competitiveness between Latin American and U.S. livestock and meat sectors. We employ a computable general equilibrium modeling framework to evaluate two scenarios: coordinated improvements in Latin American productivity, transport efficiency, and market access (Scenario I), and the minimum productivity gains required ...

Testing the isotropy of high energy cosmic rays using spherical needlets

open access: yes, 2013
For many decades, ultrahigh energy charged particles of unknown origin that can be observed from the ground have been a puzzle for particle physicists and astrophysicists.
