Porosity evolution at the brittle-ductile transition in the continental crust: Implications for deep hydro-geothermal circulation

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Recently, projects have been proposed to engineer deep geothermal reservoirs in the ductile crust. To examine their feasibility, we performed high-temperature (up to 1000 °C), high-pressure (130 MPa) triaxial experiments on granite (initially-intact and ...

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.

Compatibility of Methacrylate Based Resins Controls Interfacial Failure and Toughness in 3D‐Printed Multimaterial Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work shows that the mechanical performance of multimaterial digital light processing (DLP) printed thermoset composites is governed by resin compatibility and interfacial design rather than spatial patterning alone. Brittle and ductile resin combinations produced premature interfacial failure, while graded interfaces and mechanically compatible ...

Comparison of Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Energy Absorbers Under Uniaxial Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates LCD 3D printed Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures as mechanical energy absorbers. By comparing various base designs and layered combinations under uniaxial compression, it identifies that a Diamond‐Gyroid sandwich structure offers superior performance.

Toughness by design: multi-scale interpenetrating lattices with size-enhanced fracture resistance

open access: yesnpj Metamaterials
Architecture has long been used as a tool to enhance material toughness, but despite extensive research dedicated to studying toughening mechanisms, the role of feature size remains poorly understood.

Influence of Si Content and Milling Duration on the Microstructure and Mechanical–Tribological Properties of AlCoCrFeNiSi High‐Entropy Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Si‐doped AlCoCrFeNi high‐entropy alloys are synthesized by mechanical alloying to reveal the effect of Si content and milling time on phase evolution, microstructural refinement, and tribological behavior. A transition from FCC to BCC structure, significant grain refinement, and enhanced hardness and wear resistance are achieved, with the 4 at% Si ...

Microstructure, Thermal Transport, and Dry‐Sliding Tribology of Powder‐Metallurgy Al7075 Composites Reinforced With Sol–Gel‐Derived ZnO–rGO Hybrid Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Sol–gel‐derived ZnO–rGO hybrid nanoparticles enable Al7075 powder‐metallurgy composites to achieve concurrent gains in hardness and thermal conductivity while markedly lowering friction and wear. The hybrid architecture couples ZnO‐based load support with rGO‐assisted lamellar sliding and heat spreading, revealing a promising route toward lightweight ...

The brittle-to-ductile transition in silicon

open access: yes, 2022
S.211-228Abstract-In order to better understand the brittle-to-ductile transition in silicon, details of different experimental and numerical studies are discussed. In the concept of elastical stress intensity factors, experiments with four-point-bending

Stretching the Printability Metric in Direct‐Ink Writing with Highly Extensible Yield‐Stress Fluids

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces “drawability” as a new metric for assessing printability in direct‐ink writing, focusing on gap‐spanning performance and speed robustness. By designing yield‐stress fluids with high extensibility, we demonstrate that extensional strain‐to‐break significantly enhances printability.

Brittle-ductile transition in coal pillar failures

open access: yes, 2023
Factor of Safety (FoS) is the most widely used empirical criterion in coal pillar design. The increased vertical stresses associated with deep mining are resulting in pillar sizes much larger than those used in the development of the empirical strength ...
