On the Lightweight Potential of Laser Additive Manufactured NiTi Triply Periodic Minimal Sheet Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores the lightweight potential of laser additive‐manufactured NiTi triply periodic minimal surface sheet lattices. It systematically investigates the effects of relative density and unit cell size on surface quality, deformation recovery, compression behavior, and energy absorption.

Effects of thermal aging at 873 K on the impact properties of an ODS ferritic steel

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy, 2023
This investigation presents the effects of long-term thermal aging on the impact properties of an ODS reduced activation ferritic steel. The ODS ferritic steel, with composition Fe–14Cr–2W–0.4Ti–0.3Y2O3 (wt.

Probing the Statistical Validity of the Ductile-to-Brittle Transition in Metallic Nanowires Using GPU Computing

open access: yes, 2013
We perform a large-scale statistical analysis (> 2000 independent simulations) of the elongation and rupture of gold nanowires, probing the validity and scope of the recently proposed ductile-to-brittle transition that occurs with increasing nanowire ...

Opposing shear senses in a subdetachment mylonite zone: Implications for core complex mechanics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
[1] Global studies of metamorphic core complexes and low‐angle detachment faults have highlighted a fundamental problem: Since detachments excise crustal section, the relationship between the mylonitic rocks in their footwalls and the brittle deformation

EBSD Study of Creep‐Induced Lattice Misorientation in MgO‐Particle‐Reinforced Austenitic Steel Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Creep experiments at 900°C on coarse‐grained steel‐ceramic composites containing recycled magnesia reveal that higher ceramic volume fractions significantly enhance the creep resistance. Detailed EBSD investigations identify subgrain formation in the steel matrix as the dominant deformation mechanism.

Overview of Intergranular Fracture of Neutron Irradiated Austenitic Stainless Steels

open access: yesMetals, 2017
Austenitic stainless steels are normally ductile and exhibit deep dimples on fracture surfaces. These steels can, however, exhibit brittle intergranular fracture under some circumstances.

Evaluating Energy Absorption Performance of Filled Lattice Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Maximum stress must be considered to robustly evaluate energy absorber designs. This approach was applied to compare all types of absorbers in a single Ashby diagram and determine the utility of filling lattice voids with a second material. High‐performance fillers can improve the performance of lattices that are limited by buckling or catastrophic ...

Safety margin on the ductile to brittle transition temperature after hydrogen embrittlement on X65 steel

open access: yesProcedia Structural Integrity, 2022
Hydrogen embrittlement is a phenomenon that affects the mechanical properties of steels intended for hydrogen transportation. One affected by this embrittlement is the Ductile to Brittle Transition Temperature (DBTT), which characterizes the change in the failure mode of the steel from ductile to brittle.

The significance of velocity exponents in identifying erosion-corrosion mechanisms [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
The modes of erosion-corrosion are diverse and may vary from being ''erosion-dominated'', where erosion of metal is the dominant process, to ''corrosion-dominated'', where erosion of oxide scale is the dominant process.

Productivity‐Driven Optimization of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Parameters for IN718 Superalloy: Process Control, Microstructure, and Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates how optimizing laser power, scanning speed, and hatching distance in laser powder bed fusion can boost the productivity of Inconel 718 manufacturing by up to 29% while maintaining mechanical integrity. The work delivers a validated process window and cost–time analysis, offering industry‐ready guidelines for efficient additive ...
