Cell Model Predictions of Ductile Fracture in Damaged Pipelines

2003
This study explores further extension of the computational cell methodology to model Mode I crack extension in a high strength pipeline steel. Plane-strain analyses of a tubular structure containing longitudinal cracks with varying crack depth to thickness ratios (a/t) are employed to characterize crack-tip constraint for cracked pipes under internal ...

Damage due to fracture of brittle reinforcements in a ductile matrix

Acta Metallurgica et Materialia, 1992
Abstract A micromechanical model is developed for brittle particle reinforced metal matrix composites sustaining damage. A composite with uniformly distributed damage is modelled by a three-phase damage cell consisting of a cracked particle in a cylindrical matrix cell embedded in an undamaged composite cylinder.

Modeling of Ductile Damage and Fracture Behavior Based on Different Micromechanisms

International Journal of Damage Mechanics, 2010
The article deals with the effect of stress triaxiality on the inelastic deformation behavior of aluminum alloys. The proposed continuum model takes into account stress triaxiality dependence of the yield condition as well as of the damage criterion and the fracture condition with different branches corresponding to various damage and failure modes ...

Damage Evolution, Instability and Fracture in Ductile Solids

1990
Selected issues arising in the continuum mechanics analysis of instability and fracture in ductile metals are discussed. Three topics are considered: (i) the role of material rate dependence in setting the character of governing equations, (ii) deformation and failure in porous plastic solids and (iii) the direct calculation of fracture toughness from ...

Determination of Parameters for the Damage Mechanics Approach to Ductile Fracture Based on a Single Fracture Mechanics Test

Volume 4: Materials Technology, 2017
The local approach to modelling ductile tearing is a useful technique to give insight into fracture mechanics. However, applications of the local approach have been stymied by the high cost of finding the parameters that characterize it because of the number of specimens and expensive post-processing that the testing requires.

Critical Damage and Ductile Fracture: Quantitative Experimental Determination

1987
Summary Original metallographic observations are used to determine quantitatively the porosity and porosity gradients near fracture surfaces. The techniques combining Ion Beam Polishing, Scanning Electron Microscopy, manual drawings on tracing-paper and quantitative metallography lead to valid porosity measurements.
