The brittle-to-ductile transition in silicon
Recent experiments on the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) of precracked specimens of Si show that the transition is sharp, and that the strain rate dependence of the transition temperature, Tc, is controlled by dislocation velocity. Etch pit observations show that dislocation generation from the crack tip begins at K just below KIc, from a small ...

The material deformation modes of monocrystalline gallium antimonide (GaSb) under nano-scratching
The deformation characteristics of GaSb are investigated by employing nano-scratch tests to understand the material removal mechanism during ultra-precision grinding.

The brittle-to-ductile transition in germanium
Abstract The brittle-to-ductile transition in precracked germanium crystals has been studied experimentally. Germanium undergoes a “smooth” brittle-ductile transition, where the stress to fracture rises steadily with temperature, associated with dislocation activity around the crack front at temperatures well below the transition temperature.

Thermal effects on fracture and the brittle-to-ductile transition
The fracture behavior of brittle and ductile materials can be strongly influenced by thermal fluctuations, especially in micro- and nano-devices as well as in rubberlike and biological materials. However, temperature effects, in particular on the brittle-to-ductile transition, still require a deeper theoretical investigation.

Rheological transitions in the middle crust: insights from Cordilleran metamorphic core complexes [PDF]
High-strain mylonitic rocks in Cordilleran metamorphic core complexes reflect ductile deformation in the middle crust, but in many examples it is unclear how these mylonites relate to the brittle detachments that overlie them.

The discovery of slow earthquakes illuminates the existence of a strange depth dependence of seismogenesis, which contradicts the common understanding of smooth brittle/seismic‐ductile/aseismic transition as going deeper into the earth's surface layers ...

Finite Element Modeling of Brittle and Ductile Modes in Cutting of 3C-SiC
Machining of brittle ceramics is a challenging task because the requirements on the cutting tools are extremely high and the quality of the machined surface strongly depends on the chosen process parameters.

A Study of Mechanics in Brittle–Ductile Cutting Mode Transition
This paper presents an investigation of the mechanism of the brittle–ductile cutting mode transition from the perspective of the mechanics. A mechanistic model is proposed to analyze the relationship between undeformed chip thickness, deformation, and ...
