Migration of Barchan Dunes and Factors That Influence Migration in the Sanlongsha Dune Field of the Northern Kumtagh Sand Sea, China

Geomorphology, 2021
Abstract The Sanlongsha dune field, on the northern edge of China's Kumtagh Sand Sea, is a large area with strong winds, causing rapid dune migration and evolution of dune morphology. By combining remote sensing images with field monitoring, we analyzed seasonal and annual migration of the barchan dunes and the factors that influence this migration ...

On the Shape and Migration Speed of a Proto-Dune

Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, 2002
AbstractThe shape and migration speed of a proto‐dune are mathematically discussed. The migration speed of a low dune is shown to be inversely proportional to its wind‐directional length. Proto‐dunes, whose wind‐directional lengths are about 10 m, are expected to migrate at finite speeds. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Gravitational Circulation as Driver of Upstream Migration of Estuarine Sand Dunes [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2021
AbstractSand dunes are large‐scale rhythmic bed patterns commonly occurring in sandy shelf seas, estuaries and rivers. Field observations of sand dunes in the Gironde estuary (France) have suggested that the gravitational circulation may cause seasonal reversal of asymmetry, which is linked to migration direction.

Elongation and Migration of Sand Dunes

Geomorphology, 2004
Two distinct processes are known to act on dynamic dunes, the process of migration by erosion on the windward side and deposition on the lee side, typical for transverse dunes, and the process of elongation typical for linear dunes. These two processes are determined by wind direction relative to the dune alignment.

The dynamic characteristics and migration of a pyramid dune

Sedimentology, 2005
AbstractThe results of wind tunnel experiments and field observations show that when the intersection angle between airflow direction and dune crest (ridge) line is > 30°, a reverse vortex is formed. Because of the convergence of sand streams from the windward and lee slopes at the crest, sand accumulates in the crestal region, causing vertical ...
