Successional development of the phototrophic community in biological soil crusts, along with soil formation on Holocene deposits at the Baltic Sea coast

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution
Harsh environmental conditions form habitats colonized by specialized primary microbial colonizers, e.g., biological soil crusts (biocrusts). These cryptogamic communities are well studied in drylands but much less in temperate coastal dunes, where they ...

From distant shores to an emerging island: the role of surface and subsurface transport in modeling seed dispersal

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Long‐distance seed dispersal by ocean currents plays a critical role in structuring coastal plant communities. As direct observations of this phenomenon are infeasible, numerical modeling is a valuable tool. Here, we use Lagrangian particle tracking to examine the colonization of the newly forming island Norderoogsand (German Bight, Wadden Sea) by five

The DUNE-ALUGrid Module

open access: yes, 2014
In this paper we present the new DUNE-ALUGrid module. This module contains a major overhaul of the sources from the ALUgrid library and the binding to the DUNE software framework. The main changes include user defined load balancing, parallel grid construction, and an redesign of the 2d grid which can now also be used for parallel computations.

Unraveling the Interplay Between Collaborative Governance and Experimentation for Transformative Potential in Circular Water Systems: A Dutch Case Study

open access: yesEnvironmental Policy and Governance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Freshwater availability is a critical climate change challenge in coastal delta regions. This challenge requires a transformative change toward circular water management. While experimentation and collaborative governance are recognized as enablers of transformative change, their interaction remains complex and insufficiently understood ...
