Direct Non‐Thermal Corona Plasma Treatment in Air Pollution Control

open access: yesPlasma Processes and Polymers, EarlyView.
Explore the potential of direct non‐thermal corona plasma treatment in air pollution control. Many reactor design possibilities and development of highly efficient power supplies make this already well‐established technology an advancing solution for more and more challenges in sustainable environmental management.

Salted Identities: Biocultural Heritage for a Rehumanized Ocean Management in South Africa

open access: yesAnthropology and Humanism, Volume 47, Issue 2, Page 363-380, December 2022., 2022
SUMMARY In this article, I discuss coastal and oceanic biocultural heritage and its relevance to a transformed perception of the ocean and coast in South Africa. An anthropology of biocultural heritage at the coast reveals the multidimensional nature of personhoods—specifically transspecies, trans‐material forms of personhood—and the rich dialogical ...

Developments in Permafrost Science and Engineering in Response to Climate Warming in Circumpolar and High Mountain Regions, 2019–2024

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Research in geocryology is currently principally concerned with the effects of climate change on permafrost terrain. The motivations for most of the research are (1) quantification of the anticipated net emissions of CO2 and CH4 from warming and thaw of near‐surface permafrost and (2) mitigation of effects on infrastructure of such warming and

Quantifying Permafrost Degradation Processes: Real‐Time Analysis Using Environment‐Based Particle Image Velocimetry and Weather Data

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We present an innovative approach to understanding permafrost degradation processes through the application of new environment‐based particle image velocimetry (E‐PIV) to time‐lapse imagery and correlation with synchronous temperature and rainfall measurements.

The Pseudoenzyme β‐Amylase9 From Arabidopsis Activates α‐Amylase3: A Possible Mechanism to Promote Stress‐Induced Starch Degradation

open access: yesProteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Starch accumulation in plants provides carbon for nighttime use, for regrowth after periods of dormancy, and for times of stress. Both ɑ‐ and β‐amylases (AMYs and BAMs, respectively) catalyze starch hydrolysis, but their functional roles are unclear.

Aminoisothiazolamides, a new class of potent inhibitors of lysyl‐tRNA synthetase

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
The present work covers a series of novel herbicidal lead structures that possess an aminoisothiazolamide scaffold as a structural key feature. Lysyl‐tRNA synthetase 1 (KRS1) was identified as the biochemical mode‐of‐action. Based on optimized and tailored synthetic approaches, a broader SAR study was carried out delivering some lead structures that ...

Regional sources and sinks of dust on Mars: Viking observations of Cerberus, Solis Planum and Syrtis Major [PDF]

open access: yes
A study of seasonal variations of albedo features in the Cerberus, Solis Planum, and Syrtis Major regions was based on Viking Orbiter data obtained over more than one complete Martian year.

Rain in convective downdraughts

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study presents results from the simulation of idealised, rain‐laden downdraughts using the large‐eddy model MONC. It is found that a drier environment has the effect of increasing cooling in the downdraught, but reducing the peak in downdraught speed.

Integrative biology of injury in animals

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 98, Issue 1, Page 34-62, February 2023., 2023
ABSTRACT Mechanical injury is a prevalent challenge in the lives of animals with myriad potential consequences for organisms, including reduced fitness and death. Research on animal injury has focused on many aspects, including the frequency and severity of wounding in wild populations, the short‐ and long‐term consequences of injury at different ...

Does Removing Large Wood From Streams Reduce Large‐Magnitude Flood Risk? A Case Study From North Carolina, USA

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Large wood (LW) removal from streams is one of the most common river channel management activities and is often undertaken with little analysis of the impacts. A primary objective of LW removal is often flood risk reduction, but reports of actual flood reduction benefits have varied widely and were often anecdotal in nature.
