The Mars Dust Activity Database (MDAD): A comprehensive statistical study of dust storm sequences

Icarus, 2021
Abstract A comprehensive Mars Dust Activity Database (MDAD) over 8 Mars years (MY 24, L s = 150°to MY 32, L s = 171°) is compiled from Mars Daily Global Maps. A total of 14,974 dust storm instances are cataloged with area > 10 5 km2 that are visually distinguishable from the surface.

The “wind of 120days” and dust storm activity over the Sistan Basin

open access: closedAtmospheric Research, 2014
Mesoscale features play a critical role in creating the strong “wind of 120 days” common in eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. The Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry (WRF/Chem) model is used with the available observations to investigate the “wind of 120 days”, dust storm activity over the Sistan Basin, and major sources of dust ...

Are dust storm activities in North China related to Arctic ice–snow cover?

Global and Planetary Change, 2006
The generation and development of dust storms are controlled by land surface conditions and atmospheric circulations. The latter, in turn, is influenced by the global ice-snow cover. In this study, we examine the relationship between the characteristics of dust storm activities in north China and the changes of global climate patterns.

A 10,000 year record of dune activity, dust storms, and severe drought in the central Great Plains

open access: closedGeology, 2007
Dune fi elds and loess deposits of the Great Plains of North America contain stratigraphic records of eolian activity that can be used to extend the short observational record of drought. We present a 10,000 yr reconstruction of dune activity and dust production in the central Great Plains region, based on 95 optically stimulated luminescence ages. The

Quantitative estimation of provenance contributions to loess deposits in Eastern China and implication for paleo-dust storm activity

open access: closedGeomorphology, 2020
Abstract Improvement in the current knowledge regarding the provenance of loess deposits could clarify complex depositional processes, as well as provide new insights into the paleo-dust storm history in dust source areas. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of the size-differentiated geochemical compositions and zircon U Pb ages of the examined ...

Continue wavelet transform application on variation regularities of dust storms activities in Siziwang County, China

open access: closed2011 International Conference on Remote Sensing, Environment and Transportation Engineering, 2011
The study focused on the annual dust storm time series of past 36 years in Siziwang County, China. Based on the MHF wavelet method, the temporal-frequency multi-time scale variations and jumping features of dust storm days was analyzed. Then, reveal the periods and turning points of dust storm series in different time-scale and forecast dust storm ...

Gravity Wave Activity in the Atmosphere of Mars During the 2018 Global Dust Storm: Simulations With a High-Resolution Model

open access: closedJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, 2020
Abstract Gravity wave (GW) activity in the lower and middle atmosphere of Mars during the global dust storm of 2018 has been studied for the first time using a high‐resolution (GW‐resolving) general circulation model. Dust storm simulations were compared with those utilizing the climatological distribution of dust in the absence of ...

Strong increase in dust devil activity at Gale crater on the third year of the MSL mission and suppression during the 2018 Global Dust Storm

Icarus, 2020
Abstract The Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) instrument in the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission has collected atmospheric data from Gale crater for more than three Martian years. These data correspond to a path travelled by the Curiosity rover of 18 km in length with differences in altitude of 400 m through a variety of terrains in

Determination of elemental composition of settling particles in Israel following Saharan dust storms by neutron activation analysis

Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry Articles, 1992
Several cases of transporation and deposition of settling particles following dust storms over Israel, occurring between 1973 and 1987, were experimentally investigated. The storm particles were collected in Jerusalem and Ramat Hasharon, north of Tel Aviv.
