The Temperatures of White Dwarfs in Dwarf Novae [PDF]
AbstractWe attempt to measure the temperature of all the quiescent dwarf novae that have been observed with IUE, by fitting the observed flux distribution of white dwarfs (WDs) with known temperatures. This approach gives results similar to those using much more sophisticated modelling, but allows us to investigate the relationship with system ...

White Dwarf Photospheric Abundances in Cataclysmic Variables. IV. Deriving the [N/C] Ratio
We present results from our ongoing far-ultraviolet archival analysis of cataclysmic variable white dwarf (WD) abundances for six more systems: four SU UMa dwarf novae (BW Scl, SW UMa, BC UMa, and VW Hyi) together with the dwarf nova RX And, and the ...

Why Do Black--Hole X-ray Binaries Tend to Be Transient? [PDF]
Black hole X-ray binaries are transient probably because their discs are subject to the same thermal-viscous instability which is present in dwarf nova binary systems.

AbstractWe have summarized the current understanding and recently obtained findings about WZ Sge-type dwarf novae. We also reviewed the historical development of the understanding of these objects, provided the modern criteria, and reviewed the past research in relation to superhumps, early superhumps, and the outburst mechanism. We regard the presence

White Dwarfs in Cataclysmic Variables: An Update
In this review, we summarize what is currently known about the surface temperatures of accreting white dwarfs in nonmagnetic and magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs) based upon synthetic spectral analyses of far ultraviolet data.

Life after eruption, II : the eclipsing old nova V728 Scorpii [PDF]
The old nova V728 Sco has been recently recovered via photometric and spectroscopic observations, 150 yr after the nova eruption. The spectral properties pointed to a high-inclination system with a comparatively low mass-transfer rate.

Outbursts of dwarf novae [PDF]
A review is given of the observational facts related to the outbursts of dwarf novae and of relevant aspects of the theory of accretion disks. It now appears possible to explain the outbursts of dwarf novae in terms of a nonstationary accretion behavior. Between the outbursts, the material supplied by the secondary component is stored in the relatively

Recent work on the physical processes resulting from mass transfer between the red and blue components of dwarf nova binaries is reviewed. The optical behaviour of the blue component's accretion disc suggests that it may be the infall, accretion energy which is being liberated during outbursts.

NSV 13983: A New Dwarf Nova in the Period Gap
Aims. NSV 13983 is catalogued as a dwarf nova based on a reported outburst from 2005. The system has not yet been studied spectroscopically. We attempt to confirm its nature as a dwarf nova and determine its orbital period. Methods.
