Dynamic buckling of actin within filopodia. [PDF]

open access: yesCommun Integr Biol, 2015
Filopodia are active tubular structures protruding from the cell surface which allow the cell to sense and interact with the surrounding environment through repetitive elongation-retraction cycles. The mechanical behavior of filopodia has been studied by measuring the traction forces exerted on external substrates.(1) These studies have revealed that ...

Dynamic Buckling and Fragmentation in Brittle Rods [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2005
We present experiments on the dynamic buckling and fragmentation of slender rods axially impacted by a projectile. By combining the results of Saint-Venant and elastic beam theory, we derive a preferred wavelength lambda for the buckling instability, and experimentally verify the resulting scaling law for a range of materials including teflon, dry ...

Post-buckling dynamics of spherical shells [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2021
We explore the intrinsic dynamics of spherical shells immersed in a fluid in the vicinity of their buckled state, through experiments and three-dimensional axisymmetric simulations. The results are supported by a theoretical model that accurately describes the buckled shell as a two-variable-only oscillator.

Dynamic buckling of morphoelastic filaments

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2006
The equilibrium shapes of biological structures as diverse as plant tendrils and bacterial filaments can be altered by externally imposed stresses of sufficient duration. We study the simplest model for this morphoelasticity--a filament whose intrinsic curvatures relax to the local curvatures--and illustrate its properties in the context of dynamic ...

Interaction curves for vibration and buckling of thin-walled composite box beams under axial loads and end moments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Interaction curves for vibration and buckling of thin-walled composite box beams with arbitrary lay-ups under constant axial loads and equal end moments are presented.

Buckling analysis of thin-walled functionally graded sandwich box beams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Buckling analysis of thin-walled functionally graded (FG) sandwich box beams is investigated. Material properties of the beam are assumed to be graded through the wall thickness.

Experimental Investigation and Analysis of Dynamic Buckling of Drill String in Horizontal Well

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2017
Buckling of tubulars has been the subject of many researches in the past. However, the models in previous research always followed the same assumptions: the friction and rotation effects are ignored.

Rod Origami (RodOri) Spring Metamaterials for Tunable Vibration Control via Tailored Structural Instabilities. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh)
Rod Origami (RodOri) springs harness snap‐through instabilities of pre‐stressed curved rods with geometrically programmable buckling behavior. Integrating RodOri springs with distinct geometries yields multistable metamaterials that undergo stepwise reconfiguration via sequential snapping, achieving wide‐range tunability of stiffness and resonance ...
