Defect dynamics in crystalline buckled membranes

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2011
We study the dynamics of defect annihilation in flexible crystalline membranes suffering a symmetry-breaking phase transition. The kinetic process leading the system toward equilibrium is described through a Brazovskii-Helfrich-Canham Hamiltonian. In membranes, a negative disclination has a larger energy than a positive disclination.

Investigation of the Dynamic Buckling of Spherical Shell Structures Due to Subsea Collisions

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2018
This paper is the first to present the dynamic buckling behavior of spherical shell structures colliding with an obstacle block under the sea. The effect of deep water has been considered as a uniform external pressure by simplifying the effect of fluid ...

Molecularly Dissipative Liquid Crystal Elastomer Foams for Impact and Vibration Attenuation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid crystal elastomer foams integrate cellular deformation with mesogen reorientation to create a dual‐scale energy dissipation mechanism. Progressive pore collapse absorbs mechanical loads, while stress‐induced mesogen reorientation provides additional damping, resulting in reduced impact transmission and broadband suppression of vibrational ...

GeS as an Emerging OTS Material: Atomic Structure and Modeling of ON/OFF Switching

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The structural puzzle of glassy GeS, an advanced memory‐selector material, has finally been disentangled, revealing a patchwork of mixed tetrahedral and trigonal species. Under a high electric field, over‐ and under‐coordinated Ge and S defects, together with three‐membered rings, form an interconnected network associated with localized and extended ...

Study on impact behavior for cylindrical tubes with and without pellets

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2016
The dynamic buckling tests using cylindrical tubes with and without internal pellets were carried out to investigate the impact behavior. Various materials of cylindrical tubes and pellets were used to examine the buckling mode and the maximum loads at ...

Bistable Isochoric Chiral Metamaterials with Reprogrammable Multiaxial Responses

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An isochoric bistable rotational unit cell enables in situ modification of internal contact conditions post‐fabrication, without altering the global envelope dimensions of the surrounding architecture. By selectively switching between open and closed states, the tessellated chiral metamaterial can reprogram its volumetric response, including bulk ...

Stochastic Dynamic Buckling Analysis of Cylindrical Shell Structures Based on Isogeometric Analysis

open access: yesMathematics
In this paper, we extend our previous work on the dynamic buckling analysis of isogeometric shell structures to the stochastic situation where an isogeometric deterministic dynamic buckling analysis method is combined with spectral-based stochastic ...

Flexural–torsional coupled vibration and buckling of thin-walled open section composite beams using shear-deformable beam theory [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A general analytical model based on shear-deformable beam theory has been developed to study the flexural–torsional coupled vibration and buckling of thin-walled open section composite beams with arbitrary lay-ups.
