All‐Aqueous Pullulan Fibers Enabling Visible‐to‐Near‐Infrared Waveguiding with Mechanical and Thermal Resilience

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Pullulan, a biomass‐derived polysaccharide, is transformed into transparent optical fibers using a solvent‐free borax hydrogel‐spinning method. The fibers outperform PMMA with ≈200 MPa tensile strength and 200 °C stability, while uniquely guiding visible‐to‐NIR light and enabling additive‐free humidity sensing.

Optical Force and Torque on Dipolar Dual Chiral Particles

open access: yes, 2016
On the one hand, electromagnetic dual particles preserve the helicity of light upon interaction. On the other hand, chiral particles respond differently to light of opposite helicity.

Three‐Dimensional Hierarchical Nanowire‐Networks with Deep‐Focus Tolerance and Adhesion Robustness for Harsh‐Environment SERS Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 3D nanowire‐network SERS substrate with robust adhesion is developed, featuring pronounced z‐direction optical activity, ultralow detection limit (1.5 × 10−13 M), and excellent signal uniformity (RSD < 10%). Enabled by enhanced light scattering, increased optical density of states, and structural reinforcement, the substrate demonstrates stable, high‐

Eliminating Electromagnetic Scattering from Small Particles

open access: yes, 2013
This paper presents and discusses the conditions for zero electromagnetic scattering by electrically small particles. We consider the most general bi-anisotropic particles, characterized by four dyadic polarizabilities and study the case of uniaxially ...

Hybrid Microdiscs for Magnetically Induced Non‐Cytotoxic Thermal Actuation and Programmable Biomolecule Delivery

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Hybrid magnetic microdiscs with customizable size and composition are engineered through refined photolithography and LbL assembly. Embedded Fe3O4 nanoparticles enable localized, non‐cytotoxic heating, while protein cargos can be incorporated in tunable quantities.

Precision analysis of Geant4 condensed transport effects on energy deposition in detectors

open access: yes, 2012
A comprehensive analysis of the effects of Geant4 algorithms for condensed transport in detectors is in progress. The first phase of the project focuses on electron multiple scattering, and studies two related observables: the longitudinal pattern of ...

Scalable Thermal Engineering via Femtosecond Laser‐Direct‐Written Phononic Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that femtosecond laser‐induced periodic surface structures (fs‐LIPSS) can function as phononic metasurfaces, reducing thermal conductivity below the plain thin‐film limit. Phonon Monte Carlo analysis reveals that the periodic structures restrict phonon mean free paths.

Flexible terahertz beam manipulation and convolution operations in light-controllable digital coding metasurfaces

open access: yesiScience
Summary: The development of coding metasurface opens an important development direction for beam modulator components. However, the lack of dynamic tunability is a major obstacle to the development and practicality of terahertz coding metasurface.

Switchable Thermal Mid‐IR Conducting Polymer Antenna Arrays

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents switchable mid‐infrared plasmonic resonances in PEDOT antenna arrays. Their optical extinction peaks can be reversibly switched ‘OFF’ and ‘ON’ by tuning the polaronic charge carrier concentration via the polymer's redox state, offering modulation of optical responses in the thermal mid‐infrared range including around 10 µm ...
