A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Cognitive and Neuroimaging Divergence Between Juvenile and Adult FUS Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive motor neuron degeneration. Fused in sarcoma (FUS)‐associated juvenile ALS (jALS) represents a distinct and aggressive subgroup with rapid deterioration and poor prognosis.

Thermodynamic Pathways of Nonequilibrium Solidification in Wire‐Arc Additive Manufacturing Fe‐Based Multicomponent Alloy Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...

Novel Optical Fiber Dynamic Light Scattering Measurement System for Nanometer Particle Size

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2013
We present a novel optical fiber dynamic light scattering measurement system for nanometer particle size. A multimode fiber probe is used to highly efficiently couple and deliver laser light, while a single-mode fiber probe is used to only receive single

Application of Dynamic Light Scattering in Protein Crystallization

open access: yesCurrent Protocols in Protein Science, 2010
AbstractSuccess in determining the three‐dimensional structure of a macromolecule by X‐ray diffraction methods depends critically on the ability to obtain well ordered crystals of the macromolecule in question. Predisposition to crystallization correlates with the homogeneity of the molecules in solution.

Extracellular vesicles characterized by dynamic light scattering

open access: yes, 2021
This study attempts to isolate extracellular vesicles from blood serum frompregnant and non-pregnant women through a protocol using ultracentrifugation. Small extracellular vesicles are reported to be in the size range of30-150nm and are involved in many

Tailored Hierarchical Porous Copper Architectures via Three Dimensional Printing and Pressure‐less Sintering for Next‐Generation Lithium‐Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchical porous copper current collector is fabricated via three‐dimensional printing combined with pressureless sintering to stabilize lithium metal anodes. The interconnected architecture lowers local current density, guides uniform Li deposition within pores, and suppresses dendrite growth.

Configurational studies of asymmetric star polymers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
A series of miktoarm star polybutadienes were investigated in the melt and dilute solution state by neutron and light scattering and viscometry techniques. The stars had 8-arms, with a single asymmetric arm of varying molecular weight.

Wavelet denoising experiments in dynamic light scattering

open access: yes, 2011
Dynamic light scattering (DLS) is widely used for particle size measurement. Recovering accurate particle sizes from noisy DLS measurements (short duration and/or low count rate) is problematic.
