Automatic Classification of Planetary Surfaces Using Autoencoders With Applications to Dunes in the North Polar Erg of Mars

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract The study of planetary surface processes has traditionally relied on the manual interpretation of spacecraft images. While manual image analysis methods are robust and well‐established, they become impractical when the volume of available data is large and may introduce observer bias.

Views of Vidigal: negotiating opportunities and risks in a gentrifying favela in Rio de Janeiro Favela avec vue : négocier opportunités et risques dans un quartier en voie de gentrification à Rio de Janeiro

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Volume 32, Issue 2, Page 554-574, June 2026.
The contested dynamics of slum gentrification in Rio de Janeiro came into focus during the brief period of relative peace brought by the pacification policy leading up to the 2016 Olympics. In this unprecedented moment, Rio's South Zone favela residents experienced a respite from the daily confrontations with police operations and drug trade violence ...

Serendipitous ritualization: dynamics of lay connectivity in Chinese Buddhist temples and beyond Ritualisation fortuite : dynamique de la connectivité des laïques dans les temples bouddhistes chinois et au‐delà

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Volume 32, Issue 2, Page 390-411, June 2026.
This article contributes to rethinking the dichotomy between informal sociality and ritual formality by examining the occasional ritual encounters surrounding spirit‐tablet inscription in Chinese Buddhist temples. Rather than viewing rituals as enactments of established orders, it presents ritual engagement as a contingent process of relational ...

Faunistic inventory of the genus Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in Mauritius Island, Indian Ocean: Diversity and spatial distribution of species of veterinary interest Inventaire faunistique du genre Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) sur l'île Maurice dans l'océan Indien: diversité et répartition spatiale des espèces présentant un intérêt vétérinaire

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 40, Issue 2, Page 282-293, June 2026.
Four Afrotropical Culicoides species are recorded in Mauritius with suspected or historically involvement in BTV and EHDV transmission. All species were distributed all over the island. While intra‐specific morphological variations were detected, genetic analyses did not reveal any cryptic diversity. Abstract Viruses transmitted by biting midge species

Tree‐ring structure determines the temporal coordination between xylem growth and the gain in hydraulic conductivity in the outermost ring

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 6, Page 3732-3746, June 2026.
Summary The study of seasonal xylem hydraulics has predominantly focused on embolism‐induced losses, whereas growth‐driven increases in hydraulic capacity have received little attention. We assessed the intra‐annual dynamics of xylem formation and gain of conductivity in the current‐year ring of three species with contrasting tree‐ring structure ...

A Simple Subgrid‐Scale Model for Slope Winds on Mars

open access: yesEarth and Space Science
Global Climate Models (GCMs) are useful tools for simulating the dynamics of Mars atmosphere on a planetary scale. However their coarse resolution (∼100 km) does not allow to capture small‐scale phenomena such as slope winds which can occur over scales ...

Photochemistry of (‐)‐Levoglucosenone: Norrish Type I Reaction and Photoinduced Electron Transfer Processes

open access: yesChemPhotoChem, Volume 10, Issue 5, May 2026.
Photochemically excited levoglucosenone (LGO) efficiently undergoes Norrish type I reactions yielding particularly functionalized alkenes. In the presence of tertiary amines, this reaction is quenched by an intermolecular electron transfer. This process leads to addition products with high stereoselectivity.

Text mining methods: an answer to Chartier and Meunier [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Almost 20 years ago, in a paper introducing the text mining (TM) technique to my fellow statisticians, I expressed the fear that: “it would be unfortunate that this technique, because it is apparently so easy to use, would be abused by incompetent ...

Stability in tapia woodlands amid non‐native expansion: Integrating traditional ecological knowledge and remote sensing to track 73 years of tree cover in Madagascar

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 1403-1418, May 2026.
Abstract Afromontane ecosystems, characterised by mosaics of fire‐adapted grassy ecosystems and fire‐sensitive forests, are biodiversity hotspots facing escalating pressures from non‐native species, climate and land‐use change. Madagascar's Central Highlands is one such hotspot, hosting woodlands dominated by endemic Uapaca bojeri (tapia) which are ...
