Endemic Fulminating Amebic Dysentery

Summary In Durban, South Africa, three different racial populations live together. In one of these, the Native African, there is a high incidence of an acute fulminating rapidly fatal amebic dysentery. This form of the disease is not seen in either the European nor Indian inhabitants of the area.

Dehydroemetine in Amebic Dysentery and Amebic Liver Abscess

Summary In clinical trials of dehydroemetine, a new synthetic compound, the results in acute amebic dysentery were similar to those obtained with emetine hydrochloride, and 17 of 19 patients with amebic liver abscess apparently were cured. Significant toxicity was not encountered.
