Significant expansion in the area of eucalypt plantations in Tasmania has led to their establishment at altitudes that are close to the upper limits of the planting distributions of Eucalyptus nitens and E. globulus, the main species planted. This has implications for plantation productivity.

Photoinhibition of photosynthesis at low temperatures was investigated in two species of subalpine eucalypt, Eucalypts nitens (Deane and Maiden) Maiden and E. pauciflora Sieb. ex Spreng. Imposition of an artificial cold-hardening treatment increased the frost tolerance of leaf tissue and increased tolerance to excess light.

Tropical hardwoods dominate the market for fine timbers. In contrast, plantation-grown eucalypts, whether in temperate or tropical regions, are grown largely for pulpwood. Addressing log end-splitting and distortion of timber due to growth-stress is necessary if eucalypts are to succeed in solid wood markets.

Isozyme Variation in Eucalyptus nitens and E. denticulata

Seed samples from 22 populations across the geographic range of E. nitens (Deane & Maiden) Maiden s. str. and E. denticulata I.O. Cook & P.Y. Ladiges wereanalysed for isozyme variation and estimation of the genetic distance betweenthe two taxa. Analysis of 12 enzyme systems in 3 buffer systems revealed 12polymorphic and 5 monomorphic loci.

Intra-specific hybrids within Eucalyptus nitens and E. globulus were compared directly with inter-specific E. nitens × globulus using common parents. Diameter (age 2, 4, 6, 10 years) and Pilodyn (age 6 years) were used as indirect measures of growth and wood density, respectively. Genetic parameters were estimated for all cross types and traits.

Daily stem growth patterns in irrigated Eucalyptus globulus and E. nitens in relation to climate

Daily increments in stem radius were determined from hourly dendrometer measurements in each of three irrigated Eucalyptus nitens and E. globulus trees. Multiple regressions determined from daily weather variables accounted for 40–50% of the variance in increment. The use of weather variables lagged by 1–2 days increased the variance explained.
