Large Eddy Simulation of Shallow Cumulus Clouds in the Southern Great Plains With an Interactive Land Surface Model

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract Shallow cumulus clouds are ubiquitous over continental land masses in summertime. They impart complex patterns of solar heating on the surface below. These patterns are dominated by cloud shadows, which drive spatial variability in the surface latent and sensible heat fluxes via the surface energy balance.

V5116 Sgr, an Eclipsing Supersoft Post-Outburst Nova? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
V5116 Sgr (Nova Sgr 2005 No. 2), discovered on 2005 July 4, was observed with XMM-Newton in March 2007, 20 months after the optical outburst. The X-ray spectrum shows that the nova had evolved to a pure supersoft X-ray source, with no significant emission at energies above 1 keV. The X-ray light-curve shows abrupt decreases and increases of the flux by

Adaptation patterns and their associations with mismatch negativity: An electroencephalogram (EEG) study with controlled expectations

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 60, Issue 9, Page 6312-6329, November 2024.
In our EEG experiment employing a roving paradigm with controlled expectations, we observed an N1 initial adaptation (an initial decrease in N1 amplitude), followed by a P2 subsequent adaptation (a continuous increase in P2 amplitude) across tones. Both adaptation effects contributed to the variance in MMN amplitude, suggesting that MMN reflects a ...

Testing the optimality of USDA's WASDE forecasts under unknown loss

open access: yesAgribusiness, Volume 40, Issue 4, Page 846-865, Autumn 2024.
Abstract Motivated by the long‐lasting debate on whether the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) forecasts are optimal, we employ an unknown loss method for ex post evaluation which assumes that the USDA forecasters' loss function is unknown.
