Mineralogical composition of EAF slag and stabilised AOD slag aggregates and dimensional stability of slag aggregate concretes

Construction and Building Materials, 2016
Abstract An interesting valorisation way of EAF slag and stabilised AOD slag is their use as aggregates in concrete. Mineralogical studies of these steel slags are therefore necessary. In this study, observations of slag aggregates under UV light are associated with usual mineralogical analyses (XRD, SEM and EDS) to ensure more representative results

On some experiments on EAF slags

2009
Some EAF slags sampled from different electric steel works in the northern region of Italy have been analysed by microscopic observations and microanalytical measurements, coupled with X-ray diffraction experiments. Interesting results have been obtained concerning the relationship between structure and thermal history of the slag.

Durability of concrete made with EAF slag as aggregate

Cement and Concrete Composites, 2006
Abstract Electric arc furnace (EAF) slag, a by-product of steelmaking recovered after the oxidizing process, is useful when employed as aggregate in hydraulic concrete and bituminous mixtures. Concrete made with EAF oxidizing slag as an aggregate shows good physical and mechanical properties and further study of its durability will ensure greater ...

Efficiency of quartz addition on EAF slag stability

2013
EAF slag could be re-utilized as alternative stone material only if they are chemically stable in contact with water. The presence of hydraulic phases as larnite (2CaO.SiO2) could imply the releasing of dangerous elements into environment. Chemical treatment seems to be the only way to assure completely stable structure, especially for long-term ...

New trends on EAF slags management in the Basque Country

2000
700,000 tonnes of primary slags are generated each year in the 13 steel plants located in the Basque Country, a small region of 20,664 Km 2 . Nowadays, as there is not Spanish regulation concerning environmental aspects related to the utilization of wastes, this great amount of waste is being landfilled. In order to solve environmental problems due to

Investigations on leaching behaviour of EAF steel slags

2011
Chromium release from different types of EAF steel slags cooled in different conditions was assessed by standard leaching test. The aim of this work was to relate these results to the microstructure and phases composition of the samples, that were carefully investigated by X-Ray Diffraction experiments and SEM-EDXS analyses.

Reuse of EAF Slag as Aggregates in Structural Concretes

The growing interest of the international community in a more circular economy has led to the introduction of materials from industrial production and/or recovery in the construction sector, formerly classified as waste for disposal but now considered of fundamental importance for environmental protection and for reducing the exploitation of natural ...

APPROACH FOR SAFE AND RELIABLE USE OF EAF SLAG

2012
The demand of green and recycling technology has become, nowadays, a crucial issue for the scientific community. In this work, a preliminary approach of safe and reliable “black slag” use is discussed on chemical and microstructural characterization basis. Different EAF slag type, coming from several Italian steelmaking plants, are analyzed.

Sustainable cement-based materials with fine EAF slag aggregates

2016
Many research works have recently focused on the development of new green concretes and mortars, aiming to meet the growing interest of reducing construction industry impacts, save raw materials and prevent industrial by-products’ discard. In this contribution many experimental mortars and concretes have been produced and compared in terms of ...
