Exostosis at the inner ear canal

Exostosis of the IAC is a rare finding that may present with disabling symptoms of dizziness, hearing loss, and vestibular dysfunction. Exostosis can often be confused with IAC osteomas. The purpose of this case report is to discuss the presentation of a patient who presented with this finding.

This report presents a case of ear canal collapse in a child and demonstrates the value of impedance audiometry in cases of collapse of the external ear canal.

The increased populatiry of surfing has produced a marked augmentation in the incidence of ear canal exostosis. However, when it becomes moderately severe, I prefer to call it "hyperostosis." Exposure to cold ocean water for many years can be an important etiologic factor in hyperostosis.
