Chondrichthyans from the Devonian–Early Carboniferous of Belarus

open access: yesEstonian Journal of Earth Sciences, 2018
Diverse remains of chondrichthyans were found in several stratigraphic levels in 18 cores of the Devonian and Lower Carboniferous of Belarus. Most of the taxa were first reported in that territory. A new species of ctenacanthiform shark, Tamiobatis elgae, is described.

A new osteichthyan from the late Silurian of Yunnan, China.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Our understanding of early gnathostome evolution has been hampered by a generally scant fossil record beyond the Devonian. Recent discoveries from the late Silurian Xiaoxiang Fauna of Yunnan, China, have yielded significant new information, including the

The cranial endocast of the Upper Devonian dipnoan ‘Chirodipterus’ australis [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2018
One of the first endocasts of a dipnoan (lungfish) to be realised was that of the Upper Devonian taxon Chirodipterus australis. This early interpretation was based on observations of the shape of the cranial cavity alone and was not based on a natural ...

Metamorphic Remnants of the Variscan Orogeny across the Alps and Their Tectonic Significance

open access: yesGeosciences, 2023
Lithospheric slices preserving pre-Alpine metamorphic imprints are widely described in the Alps. The Variscan parageneses recorded in continental, oceanic, and mantle rocks suggest a heterogeneous metamorphic evolution across the Alpine domains.

Declining habitat directive butterflies within a major stronghold: Challenges for conservation Rückläufige Tagfalter der FFH‐Richtlinie in einer bedeutenden Hochburg: Herausforderungen für den Naturschutz

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Myrmecophilous Phengaris nausithous and P. teleius are highly specialized grassland butterflies and flagship species for European nature conservation, but they exhibit ongoing population declines. We show strong declines for both species in the Westerwald mountain range, western Germany, since 1994, driven by inappropriate timing of mowing, grassland ...

From biology to biotechnology: Host‐regulation factors from parasitoid wasps are a source of bioactive molecules with translational potential

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Parasitoid wasps deploy maternal and embryonic factors to reprogramme host physiology. Venom, calyx fluid, polydnaviruses, teratocytes and larval secretions act in a coordinated, compartmentalised manner. Host‐regulation factors are promising sources of insecticidal, antimicrobial and bioinspired translational molecules.

Paleogeography of the Pechora-Barents Sea paleobasins in the Late Ordovician-Early Devonian [PDF]

open access: yesНефтегазовая геология: Теория и практика
Modern studies have made it possible to clarify and detail the overall picture of paleogeographic development and establish the basic patterns of the structure of Upper Ordovician-Lower Devonian sedimentary column in the Pechora-Barents Sea megabasin ...

Reconstructing the major skull myology of the giant stem‐amphibian Mastodonsaurus: A case study for early tetrapods

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
We reconstruct the major cranial musculature of the giant stem amphibian Mastodonsaurus giganteus, revealing a differentiated jaw‐adductor system, a probable sesamoid pulley, and previously unrecognised muscles. This EPB‐based case study establishes an anatomical framework for modelling feeding in early tetrapods and supports interpretations of ...

Paleomagnetism of Phanerozoic Geological Complexes in Tuva

open access: yesВестник Камчатской региональной ассоциации "Учебно-научный центр". Серия: Науки о Земле, 2020
The authors have investigated palaeomagnetically the Ordovician, Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous strata in Tuva. In the rocks, postfolding secondary and prefolding magnetization components were isolated.

A Natural History of ‘Annoyances’: Knowing Weeds and Weeding Knowledge in the Early Royal Society and its ‘Georgicall Committee’

open access: yesRenaissance Studies, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Seventeenth‐century virtuosi often figured themselves as epistemic weeders, grubbing up rank thickets of accumulated error. In this article, I argue that these metaphors were unnerved by the shifting status of weeds—ostensibly unwanted plants from the margins of cultivated space, unploughed land or the disturbed soils between growing crops—in ...
