Trend of Nutritional Support in Preterm Infants

open access: yesPediatrics and Neonatology, 2016
Without appropriate nutritional support, preterm infants fail to grow after birth and have malnutrition. The main reason for delayed feeding is fear of immaturity of gastrointestinal function. The principles of nutritional practice should be as follows: (

COMPARISON OF OUTCOME BETWEEN EARLY ENTERAL FEEDING AND CONVENTIONAL DELAYED ENTERAL FEEDING IN ACUTE SEVERE PANCREATITIS

open access: yesPakistan Armed Forces Medical Journal, 2016
Objective: To compare the duration of hospital stay in patients with acute severe pancreatitis having early enteral feeding with that of conventional delayed enteral feeding. Study Design: Randomized controlled trial (RCT).  Place and Duration of Study:

Probiotic prophylaxis in predicted severe acute pancreatitis: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
: Background Infectious complications and associated mortality are a major concern in acute pancreatitis. Enteral administration of probiotics could prevent infectious complications, but convincing evidence is scarce. Our aim was to assess the effects of

Does enternal nutrition affect clinical outcome? A systematic review of the randomized trials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Background: Both parenteral nutrition (PN) and enteral nutrition (EN) are widely advocated as adjunctive care in patients with various diseases. A systematic review of 82 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of PN published in 2001 found little, if any ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Is the restoration of bowel sounds a prerequisite for initiating enteral feeding following pediatric laparotomy? A randomized control trial

open access: yesJournal of Pediatric Surgery Open
Introduction: Enteral nutrition is the mainstay of nutritional support in surgical patients. Ileus is the temporary inhibition of peristalsis. Primary post-operative ileus (PPI) occurs postoperatively; thence patients are traditionally kept on nil per ...

Monitoring enteral feeding tolerance in a critically ill patient using point-of-care ultrasound [PDF]

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Enfermagem
Objectives: to describe the experience of using point-of-care ultrasound to monitor enteral nutrition tolerance in a critically ill patient. Methods: this is a nursing experience report on the use of bedside ultrasound to manage enteral feeding ...

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.
