Is early feeding beneficial? How early is early?
New horizons (Baltimore, Md.), 1994Nutritional support is a vital part of the therapy of most hospitalized patients. Early initiation, particularly via the enteral route, has a significant effect on septic complications in a wide variety of patients. Early enteral feeding may also attenuate the hypercatabolic response that follows burn injury, although the evidence is somewhat ...

The Effect of Early Feeding on Postburn Hypermetabolism
The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, 1988The effect of early enteral feeding upon postburn hypermetabolism was studied on the fourteenth postburn day using five groups of rats. Feeding methods and treatments for the groups were: I) rat chow ad libitum at 2 hours postburn (PB); II) fed early by gastrostomy at 2 hours PB; III) fed late by gastrostomy at 72 hours PB; IV) fed early by gastrostomy-

Feeding Practices and Early Neonatal Jaundice
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, 1982SummaryWe studied rates of early neonatal jaundice in 135 consecutive well newborns in relation to feeding practice. Breast‐fed infants had significantly (p < 0.01) higher rates of jaundice than bottle‐fed infants. In a subset of breast‐fed infants, sugar water intake in the first 3 days of life was significantly and inversely related to estimated ...

Early Formula Supplementation of Breast-Feeding
Pediatrics, 1991Factors influencing early formula supplementation in breast-fed neonates were examined among 726 women who were delivered of their first child in one of three metropolitan Washington, DC, hospitals. Thirty-seven percent of breast-fed neonates were given supplementary formula in the hospital.

Early feeding, feeding tolerance, and lactase activity in preterm infants
The Journal of Pediatrics, 1998We sought to ascertain whether the timing of feeding initiation affected the development of intestinal lactase activity and whether there are clinical ramifications of lower lactase activity.Preterm infants (26 to 30 weeks' gestation; n = 135) were randomly assigned to begin enteral feedings at either 4 (early group) or 15 days of age (standard group).

DURATION OF BREAST-FEEDING AFTER EARLY INITIATION AND FREQUENT FEEDING
The Lancet, 1978111 primiparous women who had chosen to breast-feed their normal healthy term infants were assigned to one of four groups matched for age and social class. Two groups had the baby put to the breast within 10 min of delivery and the other two began breast-feeding 4--6 h after delivery.

The Effect of Early Feeding on the Development of Obesity
JOGN Nursing, 1974Early influences associated with adult obesity include overfeeding leading to fat cell hyperplasia, inactivity, and faulty mechanisms of control of food intake. The first year of life is critical for the intiation of these influences; thus we need to reevaluate some of the approaches to infant feeding.

Early Enteral Feeding After Surgery
Critical Care Nursing Clinics of North America, 1999The GI tract is an important line of defense in the body's immunologic system. Without the proper care and treatment, this defense fails, rapidly increasing critically ill patients' susceptibility to added infections and system failures. Through the initiation of enteral nutrition, the GI tract can be preserved, and thus possible avoidance of some of ...

Early Suckling and Prolonged Breast-feeding
Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 1986Sir.—I read with interest the article "Early Suckling and Prolonged Breast-feeding" by Taylor et al.1It might be interesting to determine the duration of breast-feeding in those of us who had our babies in the 1940s and early 1950s before "skin to skin" and "suckle immediately" were the vogue.
