Early Homo and associated artefacts from Asia

Nature, 1995
The site of Longgupo Cave was discovered in 1984 and excavated in 1985-1988 by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (Beijing) and the Chongqing National Museum (Sichuan Province). Important finds include very archaic hominid dental fragments, Gigantopithecus teeth and primitive stone tools.

Dental microwear and diets of African early Homo

Journal of Human Evolution, 2006
Conventional wisdom ties the origin and early evolution of the genus Homo to environmental changes that occurred near the end of the Pliocene. The basic idea is that changing habitats led to new diets emphasizing savanna resources, such as herd mammals or underground storage organs. Fossil teeth provide the most direct evidence available for evaluating

Affinities of the Swartkrans early Homo mandibles

HOMO, 2008
The southern African early Homo assemblage continues to make important contributions to understanding the systematics, adaptations and evolutionary history of the human genus. However, the taxonomy of this sample is in a state of flux. This study examines the size and shape of the mandibular bodies of Swartkrans SK 15 and SK 45 comparing them with ...

EarlyHomo

Current Anthropology, 2012
The origin of Homo is argued to entail niche differentiation resulting from increasing terrestriality and dietary breadth relative to the better known species of Australopithecus (A. afarensis, A. anamensis, A. africanus). I review the fossil evidence from ~2.5 to 1.5 Ma in light of new finds and analyses that challenge previous inferences.

Early Homo Sapiens

2017
This chapter describes Early Homo sapiens who lived about 100,000 years ago. Behaviorally, they were the first hominins to decorate themselves and wear fitted clothing. They also migrated across the world, including reaching Australia over water. Cognitively it appears that they had developed a second order theory of mind that we call introspection.

Early hominin diversity and the emergence of the genus Homo.

Journal of anthropological sciences = Rivista di antropologia : JASS, 2016
Bipedalism is a defining trait of hominins, as all members of the clade are argued to possess at least some characters indicative of this unusual form of locomotion. Traditionally the evolution of bipedalism has been treated in a somewhat linear way. This has been challenged in the last decade or so, and in this paper I consider this view in light of ...

Biomechanics of the hip and birth in early Homo

American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 1995
AbstractA complex of traits in the femur and pelvis of Homo ereclus and early “erectus‐like” specimens has been described, but never satisfactorily explained. Here the functional relationships between pelvic and femoral structure in humans are explored using both theoretical biomechanical models and empirical tests within modern samples of diverse body

Cranial capacity evolution in Homo erectus and early Homo sapiens

American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 1992
AbstractThis paper investigates patterns of cranial capacity evolution in Homo erectus, early Homo sapiens, and in regional subsamples of H. erectus. Specifically, models explaining evolution of cranial capacity in these taxa are evaluated with statistical techniques developed for the analysis of time series data.

Two Developments in the Mind of Early Homo

Journal of Anthropological Archaeology, 1993
Abstract Analysis of early stone tools from a perspective of developmental cognitive psychology reveals that the transition from Homo habilis to Homo erectus was accompanied by important developments in cognitive ability. From the spatial concepts used in stone knapping, and the nature of the shared intentionality required for the manufacture of ...
