Religion Compass, 2008Abstract This contribution dwells on popular culture in Mamluk Egypt and Syria. Following a short examination of this topic and of the sources, the study focuses on three themes: the cycle of life, the cycle of the year and sacred topography. Popular manners and customs provoked opposition from religious circles.

The Chronology of Capernaum in the Early Islamic Period

Excavations conducted by Vassilios Tzaferis on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority from 1978 to 1982 revealed the remains of an early Islamic settlement, which Tzaferis dated from the seventh century C.E.
