Suicide in Early Modern and Modern Europe

open access: yesThe Historical Journal, 2006
This is a review of recent English- and German-language publications on suicide, both as an act and a subject of discourse, in the early and late modern periods. It argues that, while publications on the theme have increased considerably in the past two decades, the problematic character of the evidence for suicide has led to a focus on attitudes to ...

Atomistic Mechanisms Triggered by Joule Heating Effects in Metallic Cu‐Bi Nanowires for Spintronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Bi doped metallic Cu nanowires are promising for spintronics thanks to the stabilization of a giant spin Hall effect. However, heat resulting from current injection forces Bi to leave solution, forcing segregation into monoatomic decorations which evolve into coherent crystalline aggregates.

Adaptive Twisting Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces torque‐controlled twisting metamaterials as a transformative platform for adaptive crashworthiness. By combining multiscale predictive modeling with experimental validation on additively manufactured gyroids, it demonstrates tunable stiffness, collapse stress, and energy absorption.

The Rise of Note-Taking in Early Modern Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The history of note-taking has only begun to be written. On the one hand, the basic functions of selecting, summarizing, storing and sorting information garnered from reading, listening, observing and thinking can be identified in most literate contexts ...

Accounting for the great divergence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper “accounts” for the Great Divergence between Europe and Asia in two ways. In the sense of measurement: (1) the traditional view, in which the Great Divergence had late medieval origins and was already well under way during the early modern ...

Per una storia del “patrimonio” in età moderna. Annotazioni sui provvedimenti di tutela emanati nel 1600 tra Nord e Sud Europa

open access: yesActa ad Archaeologiam et Artium Historiam Pertinentia
While it is generally accepted that the legal protection of heritage developed together with the refinement of codified law in Europe from the late 1700s, and especially the 1800s, the first regulations dedicated to the custody of antiquities were ...

Generative Models for Crystalline Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Generative machine learning models are increasingly used in crystalline materials design. This review outlines major generative approaches and assesses their strengths and limitations. It also examines how generative models can be adapted to practical applications, discusses key experimental considerations for evaluating generated structures, and ...
