Weather and the Earth's magnetic field
Nature, 1974A comparison of meteorological pressures and the strength of the geomagnetic field suggests a possible controlling influence of the field on the longitudinal variation of the average pressure in the troposphere at high latitudes. If so, changes which occur in the pattern of ‘permanent’ depressions in the troposphere as the magnetic field varies (for ...

On the Origin of the Earth's Magnetic Field
Physical Review, 1939The terrestrial field is traced here to the existence of thermoelectric currents in the metallic interior of the earth. The currents owe their existence to inhomogeneities continually created by turbulent convective motions. In order to obtain a nonvanishing resultant angular momentum of the currents around the earth's axis, the current system must ...

Origin of the Earth's Magnetic Field
Nature, 1939THERE is considerable physical evidence that the earth possesses a metallic core1. Jeffreys2 has estimated the viscosity of the core and finds it as low as 1010 C.G.S. units. If this value is correct, an intense thermal convection must be maintained in the core by the heat development of radioactive impurities, even if the amount of the latter is ...

Stabilization by the Magnetic Field of the Earth
1970The magnetic field of the earth is approximately a dipol field (fig. 5.1). The dipol axis is inclined to the earth’s axis, but the inclination is usually neglected. The stabilization by means of the earth’s magnetic field is based on the interaction between this field and the magnetic field of the satellite.

The magnetic field in the Earth's tail
Planetary and Space Science, 1973Abstract Detailed magnetic fields in the Earth's tail are calculated from a proposed model containing Beard's tail surface and a current sheet inferred from satellite observations. The component inside and perpendicular to the neutral sheet permits us to construct the drift pattern in the magnetic equatorial plane for charged particles.

ON THE ORIGIN OF THE EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD
1963Abstract : It is suggested that the inner core of the earth may be a new high pressure phase of iron. The observed density is in accord with a phase transition presumed to be associated with the transfer of two of the '3p' electrons of the 'argon core' of atomic iron to the '3d-4s' band.

Reversals of the Earth's Magnetic Field
Nature, 1958AMONG the many surprising results of studies of the natural remanent magnetization of rocks1, one of the most curious has been the conclusion that the Earth's magnetic field has undergone changes of polarity; that, in fact, reversals of the main field have been a persistent feature of its behaviour.
